Please help me w this skirt

Hi mamas.
I normally make a much fuller, patchworked skirt, but for myself I prefer a long, slim, barely a-line shape. I haven't been able to find any this year so I have to make them myself. I found a big enough piece of pretty fabric in my stash, which I bought for $1 a yard and I am certain it is not 100% cotton (which is what I usually buy). Maybe it is poly/cotton, or maybe even just poly, I don't know. It is stiffer than all cotton. But it was a really pretty pattern and at $1 a yard I bought three. So I decided to use this to make my skirt (and a matching bag ). I used my favorite skirt for the pattern but somehow (not sure, because I did factor in seam allowances when cutting) it is just a bit small. It will fit, but once I hem and then turn under the top for the casing, it will be shorter than I want. Also it is a bit thin. So I am thinking I will line it. First question is, will it be all good to use 100% cotton muslin to line this blended fabric? And then, when I line the skirts I usually make, I line each piece before putting it together, but I have already put this one together. So I plan to make an identical muslin "skirt," then sew rst at the top...that way I will not have to turn under at the top for the casing. But the question is, I would need to make the muslin skirt EXACTLY the same size, right? And then topstitch down he side seams, right? And then on the hem...can I just turn under each piece (the muslin and the skirt fabric) narrowly once and then topstitch them together or should I leave the lining free, like a seperate layer (without topstitching the side seams)? Like I said, I am trying to preserve as much length as possible. I guess I could cut the muslin a little longer for its hem, or maybe trim w eyelet for like a built in petticoat? Or what about hem facings? Can I just turn under once and then use lace or something over it to prevent ravelling? Ideas, suggestions, advice, will be much appreciated as I don't want this to be a scrapped project! Thanks!

I would make a muslin layer the same size and sew the right sides together at the top and then make a small casing. That way you are not losing length by making a casing for the elastic. I would not sew the sides together, as you can get ripples if the materials shrink at different rates, and I would make the muslin layer an inch shorter than the outer layer and hem them seperatly

Do you have any fabric left or any fabric that coordinates? You might try adding a flounce for the extra length. I think flounces look really cute on skirts and aren't that hard to sew. It is a big look this year.

nym's right, attach the lining at the waist for your casing then let it hang free. The lace/petticoat idea could work, I think it depends on your personality to pull that look off, you know? You can face the hem too, and you can sew the facing to the inside like you probably were thinking or you can sew it to the outside to add interest at the hemline. All depends on your fabric and what you want to do.

Those are my thoughts, good luck!

ITA with nym. And if you want to maximize the length you could get some hem "stuff" to hem it with. I forgot what it's called : and am nak so I can't go see, but it looks like flat lace, about 1/2-5/8" wide. Stitch it to the right side of your skirt hem, just flat, not like a seam. Then turn the fabric up about 1/4", then stitch on the lace to hem. Anyone know the name of that stuff?
