How to substitute applesauce for oil?

I've heard before that it's possible to make recipes with applesauce instead of oil, but is it a direct substitution? If a recipe calls for a cup of oil, will a cup of applesauce work? Or is there more to it than that?

Yep, it sure does! I have also used mashed bananas in some recipes in place of eggs and it works great, too!

I use it al the time, but just a note. Don't substitute applesause for butter in cookies (even half the butter). The cookies turn out very runny, but they still taste good :

You can even sub applesauce for eggs. I have done it and it worked pretty nicely. Pearsauce works for oil, too.
