Serging 101

Ok, I've just started serging with a Babylock (an old, all metal babylock model 418).

It seems to be working great. The tension dials can go round and round and round before stopping so getting the tension right seems to be a bit of a challenge. The needle thread is fine but the other two are fighting! lol Sometimes the middle thread that is supposed to be at the edge of the material is a little under and sometimes it's so under it's at the edge of the lower thread! I don't know that anyone would have any advice on that but I thought I'd throw it out there! The manual shows me how to adjust it to move that middle thread to the edge but it never seems to adjust quite right.. still playing with it though. It's almost right, I think.

Second, is it supposed to be cutting off matieral? Is that how I know I have it in the right position when I'm feeding it through? How far toward the knife should I have it over? I'm not sure if that's a clear question but I want to start sewing diapers again tomorrow and thought if I posted my questions I might have enough answers to begin "real" serging.

Third, the thread I have is 100% polyester (it was given to me with the serger) - is that ok for diapers? Some of it is Coats and another is Talon - I know Coats isn't the best name but it should hold, right?

Hmm.. any other tips you have would be greatly appreciated.

Fortunately I'm not running into problems with loopy thread all over - probably because I've got the stitch length where it needs to be.. or at least that's what I'm thinking!

Thank you again!

Dont be afraid to play with the tension dials. I keep a lot of scrap fabric to use when I change loooper threads to make sure my tension setting sre right. You will know they are right if the upper and lower looper threads meet at the center edge of the cut fabric. If they are off at all the looper threads will pull either to the fron of the fabric or to the back. I have an Elna so I am not familiar with the tension dials on a Babylock. Just keep playing with it

Make sure you watch the blades when you are serging and not the needles. I learned this early on! I would think you would want to cut off whatever your suggested seam allowance is. I am terrible at eyeballing things so I mark where I am supposed to serge before and just follow my markings

Hmmm, I'm not too far from you, you could bring yours over and be annoyed with me :LOL . I just got a brand new serger and I'm scared of it, it's a beast...and worse it's computerized.

I do know that wooly nylon thread is supposed to be the best because it is very soft, with serged dipes the thread is next to skin. I get it through my co op cheap.

Well the serger and I are starting to get along!

I've nearly killed a blanket practicing all over it but that's helped and I made a diaper last night with it that could have turned out way better but it was a start. Tonight I made a diaper and it turned out MUCH better! The serging is a little loose but not loopy and I'm relieved!

So what changed? I took Lisa's advice and played with things. After 48 hours of thinking about it - it occurred to me where to have the tension set on all of the dials! The way it was worded sounded really odd and now I finally get it! Plus I widened the stitch (the day before I only lenthened it) to 3.5mm and that made a world of difference! AND I raised the presser foot - which turned out to be extremely important when turning corners.. go figure!

Anyway, it's not at the perfect stage but it's managable and getting much closer! WOO HOO! lol

So.. Miss Computer (insert slight jealousy at a super cool machine) what can this novice help you with! ROFL!

i can't believe you already have a serger, jenn! lol you are unstopable!

i have had one for a while now myself, but you are far ahead of me if you're doing diapers on it. i am so scared of that darned machine! i actually have two of them here -- one that i bought from someone at another sewing forum for $80 ppd on a lark and one that is borrowed. so, i really wanted to serge the prefolds i made for my friend recently and i managed to break both of the machines within about an hour and a half. so, i got mine fixed and picked it up yesterday and i'm afraid it's going to sit in my garage for a while. i'm too scared. <<sigh>> but the zig-zagging i did on those prefolds looks pretty good, imo.
