New Bipolar Thread! - Page 14

So what do you do when you're pregnant, in need of a medication adjustment, your doctor forgets your phone check-in appointment and her office doesn't return your calls? This is by no means our only issue, only the latest and most pressing. I've already scheduled a new patient appointment with another doc but of course it's not until next month.

Continue to call the office, have them page the on call doctor.

Find a new one, and fire the old one.

If you trust your GP to adjust the meds (like if you know what needs to be adjusted) have them make them. But if you're finding/have an appointment with a new one already don't bother.

My family doctor has told me before that with 14 years of successful medication management behind me, I'm more qualified than she is to make decisions about my meds. That's what my CNM said also. I've already got a pharmacy in my cabinet so I don't need any scripts. I'll probably give the GP a call though. Thanks.

Thanks again. She finally called (2.5 hours after our appointed time).

I'm keeping the new patient appointment with the other doc, though I might not change until after the birth. I've stuck with her this long because she is good with meds, and I'm reluctant to change mid-way through pregnancy. But you should have heard what she had to say about breastfeeding on Lamictal!

subbing. I want to read through the thread and get some insight. I was diagnosed with bipolar 2 about 8 or so months ago, and have been medicated. I think I may need a med adjustment though. Anyway, hi!

I'm curious, what did she have to say?

I'm mostly a lurker here, but have been BFing on lamictal since my DD was about 18 months. (Not a newborn, but I had to convince my pdoc)

I have a mixed dx, Bipolar 2 and borderline personality disorder. I'm also recovering from Marijuana addiction. tough stuff. My kids are coming home Sunday from the summer at dads. I am really looking forward to them being here this time, I am more stable right now than I have been in so long.:

I'm curious about something: How many of you have tried alternative therapies for your bipolar? The only thing I ever tried was Omega 3 Fatty Acids, which never made much of a difference for me. I am also doing chiropractic treatments for TMJ but noticing a difference emotionally as well. I'm thinking about consulting with an osteopath or homeopath. (Don't worry, I won't just go off my meds willy-nilly).

Thoughts?

I got some great progress with homeopathy, but then I couldn't pay for it anymore
I do also get adjusted regularly at the chiro too

Glad to see this thread getting some action again!

Hi to the new ones, and welcome.

Talula, I tried natural for awhile, seemed to help somewhat but not enough. I know that there are lots of people out there who take care of themselves completely naturally, but it's a lot of work and takes some dedication and life changes too, so I know it's not for everyone.

Nashville, sorry about the troubles with your pdoc. That's suckish being brushed off like that. I agree (as usual) with Autumn on this one.

Rachel, glad you're enjoying your girl :

I had the same experience, AidynElyMama, although I will say I never tried homeopathy or really a whole lot of herbalism. And I'm seeing a chiro + therapist right now which seems to be going well.

On the other hand, every time I've gone off Wellbutrin it's been a disaster and I'm reluctant to do so now. It's a pretty good med for me overall and has hardly any side effects. I take Zyprexa PRN as well when I think I am starting to get into a bad state. I'd like to cut out the Zyprexa all together becuase of the weight gain issues, but there really isn't a good alternative ESP when throwing pregnancy/lactation risks into the mix. I've been on just about every med and unfortunately for me I'm allergic to Lamictal.

I liked zyprexa a lot, but went from plain obese to morbidly obese in 2 months...I am lucky to be able to take lamictal.

I actually wasn't dx with BP II until after DD was born. My pregnancy with her was HORRIBLE. At one point DH kicked me out of the house for a couple of days b/c I was in such a rage all of the time he was afraid I'd hurt DS. (I've never told anyone that before except my therapist!) One doc told me that his depressed patients tend to get better during pregnancy but the bipolar ones go totally off. He thought I was "just" depressed and dismissed my comments about my rabid angry behavior. I have a better pdoc now.

There are a number of reasons we're not having any more kids, but this is one of them. I'm glad to hear others can manage during pregnancy.

My PDOC told me some bipolar patients are way better in pregnancy and some are worse. Progesterone can be very calming. I do really well in pregnancy for the most part, except in the very very end.

I think you're right, it can go either way. I was better with my son, waaayyy worse with my daughter. So bad they wanted to take her out early because they were afraid of what I might do.
