Thank you SO much to those who responded. I actually thought it was a term that girls of that age responded positively to. Thanks for straightening me out!
Is there any inoffensive term I could use in its place? Preteens seems somewhat corny to me.

"Young people" seems a bit vague to me though, since 9-13 is a pretty specific age group. "Tweens" seems like a marketing term to me. As the parent of a 12yo, I would be more likely to purchase a book that used "preteen." I suppose you could use "young people" if you had a sub-title clarifying that a bit.
