Is it possible for infants to have environmental allergies? I thought I read or was told that it takes 12 months of exposure to develop an environmental allergy. My 6 month old DD definitely has food allergies, intolerances and sensitivities, but I was wondering about other things... pollen, dust, grass, animals, etc. Does anyone have links to or information regarding research regarding infants and environmental allergies? TIA!

:I've been wondering the same thing about my almost 10 mos old. Especially lately when all the pollen and mold is going crazy here in the midwest. He's rubbing his eyes and nose all the time.....

Oooooh yes! Ds is 8 months old and he has eczema which seems to be caused mostly by environmental allergies as well as food. Eczema babies are generally allergic to dust and sometimes other things like perfume and detergents. Hay fever is always an environmental allergy, albeit worsened by food at times.
I don't have any links, but I do have my experience with three atopic boys, one with hay fever and the other two with eczema. All three react to environmental allergens and have since babyhood.

My understanding is that babies rarely react to the air borne allergens with the hay fever type reaction that we associate with them. But a topical reaction (ie eczema) can be to anything- an internal allergen(food) or an external allergen(detergent, dust mites, dander, etc)
However, I am not allergic to pollens, but when the trees or grasses are really blooming, there are so many particles in the air that even I feel the gritty eyes, scratchy throat feeling typical of a hay fever like reaction. So I am sure babies can too.
Let me know if you find anything else out...my 4 month old ds is struggling with eczema- we are able to keep it under control but he is still so itchy... it is really hard to watch!

Owen's mom, I just wanted to tell you what worked for our babe. He had the severest possible full body eczema for three months, from the time he was 5 months old until now, he's eight months. What worked for us was a combination of homeopathy, NMT, and severel other treatments. We are now using Florasone cream, chinese pearl powder cream, Bach flower essences, colloidal silver, probiotics, and I'm taking borage oil and cod liver oil. I'm also using acupressure regularly to boost his immune system.
His eczema is almost completely gone. His skin is smooth and soft and he has much less itching.

My dd was born with EA's so yes an infant can have them. She reacted to dust mites within days of birth and we had to allergy proof the room but thankfully I always already aware of EA's since I have them too. You can easily seal your mattress and pillows for less then $100 and I know you can buy the crib sized allergy barriers though specialty stores online.
