New baby, no poo?

We are a no 'poo family, but our new dd (born Fri) has some pretty nast hair. She was covered in mec at birth and it is still in her hair. I want to clean her hair to get out the mec and the greasy feeling (she has a ton of hair). Would baking soda be too harsh? What else could I use?

TIA

First of all CONGRATS! I'm not sure how well it works to do no-poo on a newborn, I'm even nervous about doing anything with baking soda and ACV on my 1 yr old dd (she's got super dry sensitive skin). Could you try a tiny, tiny bit of natural shampoo or soap mixed with a little oil so it wouldn't be drying (making sure not to get it in her eyes)? I know that meconium is pretty sticky and hard to get off, so that might work better than the no-poo routine you use with your family, IMO.

Thanks for the suggestion. We did end up using a tiny bit of baby shampoo because her hair was so yucky. With my younger ds we never had to worry because he never had hair till past a year :LOL She has a TON!

I was going to suggest a little soap, if you have a nice gentle one. I have no-poo'd with my dd since I found out you didn't have to use shampoo (1 month or so) and her hair is as clean looking as anyone elses. She was born with a full head, btw. The only time I find I have to use soap on her head is if I put oil in her hair to get rid of some cradle cap. BTW: I did not find a difference in the cradle cap using shampoo or not. i think it is just something they grow out of, more of a nuisance than anything, plus with so much hair I'm the only one who ever notices it.

congrats on the baby!!! The journey begins!

We're not a no poo family... But I do use organic natural products most of the time. I've used my shampoo on my dd since she was a new born, she has hair where my boys didn't.

I hope you get the nasties out, I can understand wanting them out.

Dr. B's soaps are good cleansers, but make hair feel strange. I use Natural Family Boutique's shampoo and conditioner. They have a baby wash, but I didn't like it for hair. I've tried other organic shampoos and they are not as organic as NFB, and the other's leave a greasy feel, NFB does not.

If all else fails, a pea amount of regular baby shampoo just this once wouldn't do lasting damage. We're all here still and most of use were lathered in the stuff! "chills up my spine" or poor parents didn't know any better. At least mine didn't.
