i have a sewing machine, no serger though - i have a joann's fabric nearby...

how do i get started? should i try a fitted first? i'd really like to make aio's - but am clueless as to where to buy fabric/pul, what kinds to buy, how much to buy...

what patterns are available? is there a one-stop-shop out there where i can get everything i need? do i need to look for a serger?

thanks for any advice and suggestions!

I'm in the same boat, but a little further ahead--I've already bought all the materials. Haven't started sewing yet. I'm afraid!
diapershop.com is the One Stop Diaper Shop where I bought all my stuff. I also bought their Very Baby AIO pattern b/c it is supposed to be really easy and versatile. I plan on varying mine, but using the pattern as a guide. Good luck!

thank you! i will check that place out!

if you don't mind me asking - how much did you spend up front?

I think around 80, including shipping. I did two separate orders so I don't remember exactly. That includes the pattern too. But I didn't buy any birdseye. If you go to this page, http://diapershop.com/yardage.htm#vbaio it tells you how much of everything you need.

But I'm making mine different, so I didn't buy any absorbent material. I just bought PUL and suedecloth (enough for a dozen diapers). I'm going to make these with one layer of PUL and a layer of suedecloth and then just make a few lay-in soakers for each shell. (I'm making the soakers out of microfiber towels from Sam's club and covering them with suedecloth). That way I can reuse the shell.

So it will be more if you are going to do it the way the VB AIO's are.

80 is not bad at all - what i would really like to do is an aio with kind of a trifold soaker sewn in - my dream diaper, lol! i want it quick dry and i don't have to match soakers to diapers, kwim? i don't know if you're familiar with the eezi-fits, but that's what i want, just an aio.

well, i'll start exploring the diapershop! thanks!

That's pretty much what I want to do. How much of each (suedecloth and PUL) did you get? I'm horrible w/ numbers and have been going crazy trying to figure yardage out.

Thanks!

Well the OSDS says to get 3 5/8 yards of PUL to make a dozen diapers (5/8 makes 2). So I got that much, and for the suedecloth, I got 4 yards, since I'll need the same amount as the PUL plus a little extra for soaker toppers. Don't know if that will be enough. And I was a little disappointed in the color of the suedecloth--not as pink as I was expecting. So I have 4 yards of that if any of you are planning on buying some (Hope that's not aganist the rules!!)

OK, I feel kind of dumb now. I've looked at those yardage requirements be fore, but Inever stopped to think that I'd need just as suedecloth as PUL. Silly me.
