frustrating TV portrayal of HB (again!!) vent. - Page 2

MysticHealerMom, you are too funny. Wish I had Tivo, although I watch too much tv as it is. But Dharma is coming on now in reruns and I want to watch them all! When it was on, I always missed it b/c I was busy that night. Anyway, thanks for clearing up the episode confusion. Sounds interesting. Hope I catch it sometime so I can TEAR IT APART!!! My husband is such the home and natural birth advocate, and whenever he hears about someone having a c-section, he rolls his eyes! I have to always remind him that there are legit reasons for cesarean birth. He's very outspoken and always is speaking up for homebirth whenever the oportunity arises!

Funny story about Maternity Ward (I'll try to keep it short!!). While I was in labor, our midwives suggested a walk to help things along. While we were gone, they watched Maternity Ward b/c it was on! What a coincidence! They were so mad b/c the docs were lying to the women about they're true conditions, making them so much more high risk than necessary. Just the perfect timing to remind ALL of us why we were at home!

And the other day, I saw two "A Baby Story" episodes (wish it were "BIRTH Stories"!) and the first was a glorious hospital birth--long long labor, but no pit or epid. OR cont. fetal mont.--the doc ACTUALLY used a doplar during labor! Even though she was quite the "coach" during pushing, she immediately laid the babe on mom with minimal draping, etc. And mom was nursing soon after! And right after that was an episode of a perfect home water birth.

LOVE IT!!

Good thing I don't have cable! - the Big Three Networks give us enough!!

Friends really reaally was burning me last night!!! How old is the baby supposed to be now? Like 3 weeks or soemthing? And Rachel is having such big doubts about leaving her behind for a night out to dinner that she just plainly states she is not going! awwww I think, finally a TV mom who is not going to have a baby and then have the baby disapear (Think Murphy Brown!) A TV mom that is going to stand up for her instincts to not be seperated from her baby. Here is a thought Ross, take the baby with you!!!! I am sure Rachel can afford a 300$ fancy nursing dress! I dind't get past the part where they locked themselves out of the apt though, so I dont' know anythign past that.

And ER UGHHHHH. All of us edumacated womyns knew what a load of crock that whole homebirth plot line was. I didn't pick up on the retained placenta part, I just thought they left so fast because there was somethign wrong w/ the baby that she just hadn't delivered it yet. (If I faced that "situation", giving that I am UC'ing, I would be nursing asap! ANd if bleeding too much afterwards well I plan on telling dh to cut a bit off of the maternal side of the placenta and I'm going to stick it in my mouth) ANYWYAS something wrong with the baby and they NEVER mention that it has nothing to do with where you have the baby, and being in the hospital isn't going to improve odds of living. Oh I hated the dialogue between the midwife and mother when they first got there. It is as if the writers on ER, where there is one or two real MD's on staff to make sure everything is "Authentic" <gag> has an anti-homebirth agenda!! Remember when Lizzy had her and Mark's baby? "Any later and we would have had a homebirth on our hands " OH NO!

<stomp stomp> that is my rant for the morning hehehe.

off topic, more tivo

T (he does look cranky)

I just had to say that if you have sattelite or cable and you can get a Tivo box, it's really cool because you don't have to be tied to the networks schedules. We never watch live tv. We watch primetime when we want and only the shows we want and we don't have to watch a dumb show between two good shows. I think it saves a lot of time, in a way. It's less frustrating, that's for sure.

We got tivo because I was going back to school and there was 1 show I didn't want to miss and I didn't want to procrastinate and not do my homework. DH was already on the tivo bandwagon.

It just makes me feel like I'm in control of tv instead of the networks being in control. Making me watch some shows on Friday nights, or putting all the good shows from different networks on the same night (we have 2 tuners so we can record 2 things at once). And all those commercials we avoid.

I'm not usually into more stuff, I've been trying to keep it simple for a while. We don't have all sorts of things we used to have to have, but I like tivo because I feel more in charge. I think this is what our vcr's were supposed to give us.

Gad. I'm not making any money selling tivo, or anything

ER could have been alot worse. I watched it, and I was irritated about the dialogue between the midwife and mother, and how the mother said she should have birthed in the hospital. But it SHOULD have been made more clear that where you birth has nothing to do with that baby's health. He was already sick before he was born with the disorder. It was a sad story. The writing could have been alot worse, IMO. It's frustrating that they won't do a positive angle, like mom and baby were healthy, but went to the hospital to be checked out or something. But it is a show about drs in the hospital. It is too bad Abby didn't say something to the mom about the whole thing.

I agree on ER being annoying though. It used to be a much better show to watch.

I was actually relieved with the ER episode. I was expecting a lot worse, with the doctors lecturing the parents how they risked their baby's life, etc. I was glad that the baby's condition had nothing to do with where it was born, although I wish someone had actually said that. As far as the mother saying, "Maybe I should have had him at the hospital," that was before they knew what was wrong with him. I think if your baby was sick it would be natural to question and doubt yourself.

Anyway, it could have been much worse!

Yes, Clevah Girl, that's what I was thinking too! Could have been much much worse. I was just cringing the whole time.

Wish I could get Tivo--love the idea of control!! Maybe one day soon...

I also wanted to say that there have been several positive homebirth stories.....on Little House on the Prairie!!! Always loved how Mrs. Ingals was the town midwife! And they called "Doc Baker" when complitions came up. But dads were always outside pacing. Well, anyway, that just came to my mind, so I thought I'd share!

Wishin' and hopin' for positive birth stories in real life and Hollywood,

Emily
