Haven't seen the movie yet, but HAVE to see it!

Last year when I went to NYC me and a friend were walking through Central Park, and we saw them filming a scene from the movie... WE SAW TOM CRUISE!!!! (hubba hubba!)

I've heard that it was a confusing movie, and to REALLY understand it one would probably have to see it twice... though I'm really intense at watching movies, so don't know if this would be true for me...

You liked it?

what did you think?

I have not seen it. It doesnt look so good to me. I got enough of Tom's sexual angst in Eyes Wide Shut, but would like to hear your review

and I don't even like Tom!

I saw it the Friday it was released, and was really pleasantly surprised. I don't much care for Tom Cruise but enjoyed him in this movie. It's worthwhile seeing, it twists around a lot, and while I was not completely thrilled with the ending (I thought the punch of the ending should have been shorter to have more impact) it's a good movie, visually interesting, etc. Jason Lee is great, the music is really good (how can you not like a movie that not only uses, but acknowledges Jeff Buckley), C. Crowe utilizes good actors again which I always like (Jason and Noah were in Almost Famous, etc.). Interesting movie, worth seeing. I'm looking forward to seeing the original Spanish version.

I haven't seen it, but I did see the original foreign version- I thought that one was very good! But, I can't seem to remember the name right now... it's on the tip of my tongue...argh!:

LOVED IT!!!

It is not your typical Hollywood blockbuster, though, so I've warned others before going to see it. My favorite movies are the one's I'm still thinking about several hours (or days later. Anyone seen Memento, btw?). I thought it was fabulous. The cinematography, layout, and even the acting were good. Not much of a Tom Cruise fan (or Penelope Cruz for that matter), but the story and direction completely compensated for any acting drawbacks.

Nursing Mother, you should see this despite the TC/NK breakup. I know you like Nicole but I've read in several places that the divorce was her fault. Sorry!

Bebe luna: the original spanish version was called "Open Your Eyes".

Others who have seen it please also add your thoughts on why it's R, so Nursing Mother can make a more informed decision about her dd seeing it...

I think it is R mostly because it is an adult movie - meaning, the whole concept and story and such is a fairly heavy, strange, twisting one. Some of it is a little disturbing, in terms of themes and even visually. There is certainly language in it that I wouldn't use around my parents. There's sexuality in the movie and some strong sexuality in particular that's pretty intense (not in a good way). There's some brief nudity but it's not extravagent. Would I take a 15 year old to see it? Actually, that might be a way to go, to see it with her, then you could talk about it? I think it might be okay for a teen who is a more cerebral, thinking, creative kind of kid - does that make sense? Someone who will take the whole and think the wierd questions of it through, talk about it with someone, etc. I think if you go intending to think about it, it is a great movie. If you go intending to be entertained, then it's probably a little too dark and loaded not to be a little disturbing.

Nursing Mother (and others),

There's a review of this movie at http://www.kids-in-mind.com/V/vanilla_sky_2001.htm
It's a great site - they rate the movies on Sex, Violence and Profanity and provide details of each category (without using names of the characters). I've found the reviews very helpful in determining what movies I take my 5yo son to (very few).

I am usually attracted to very few movies, but this one has my attention and I may go see it. I love Tom Cruise, so that's part of the attraction for me.

thanks!

Thanks Deb, that's great. I like that it is not a "the movie is good or bad" review, it's a nuts and bolts "this is what you and your kids will see/hear" review, which is important to know. Thanks for posting that link.

I wanted so badly to like this movie, but I left it feeling extremely disapointed and frankly annoyed. It simply wasn't worth the trip - the trip to the theatre or the trip that the movie takes you on until it's final destination!

I don't want to get into specifics about the plot twists in case I ruin the surprises but all in all I'd recommend skipping this one - if you want to see it wait for video.

I like crowe but not certain I want to see this one.....

I liked it

I really liked the film. I thought the concept was hot . I'd never seen Penelope Cruz in an US movie so that was an attraction too ( although I could have done without the exotic Spanish woman theme) But had I known before that originally it was a Spanish language film, I would have seen that. I'm gonna rent it this weekend.

Peace

Yammer, I agree with you. We were interested...well until the end when we just wanted it to be OVER.

I found a review of this movie that pretty much encapsulates why I didn't care for it.

http://www.dailynewslosangeles.com/s...1/14/mov01.asp

I felt like the explanation, the lucid dream option/cryogenics, was a total cop-out. Kind of like deus ex machina in theatre. And god, the MUSIC! Ugh. Sometimes the music totally wrecked a scene cuz it overtook it rather than complement it. I also got really sick of the pursed lip/little girl voice of Penelope Cruz. TOO cute, kwim? Cameron Diaz was great in this. I usually don't like watching her try to act but she was wonderful in this movie. JMO.

I really hated that I finally get to see Tilda Swinton (or is it Swinson??) again and she's in THIS movie. Sigh.

I could go on and on and on...LOL
