What a stunningly beautiful, deeply touching movie. Scarlett Johansson is brilliant. A totally different role for John Travolta. I've never been a huge fan, but was thoroughly awestruck by this performance.
It's a story about creating family where it's least expected, about spiraling down, about salvation, about the way New Orleans can romance you and steal your soul right out from under you. If you've lived there, you'll understand. You'll get the walking for miles, the drinking away the heat of the day, the intricate, tangled webs that get weaved through circles of friends. If you haven't, you'll probably still be entranced.
The chemistry between the three main characters (particularly between Gabriel Macht - who I had never seen in anything before - and Scarlett Johansson) was tangible. Once the movie was over, I actually found myself going back and watching many of the scenes over, just to feel them again.
