Reuseable shell Aio's, hidden pul .....

I can't really decide what kinda diapers I want to make. I was thinking pockets or aio's because I like the idea of the built in cover. I do like fitted diapers but I am not loving covers. I had some litewraps and proraps that I didn't use because they left red marks on my dd's waist and I hate covering the cute prints.

I was thinking of reusable shell aio's but I was wondering how they work. I love the concept of the reusable shell but I wonder if it really works. What would you use as the inside of the diaper...microfleece/suedecloth? Then you would have to have a lay in /snap in soaker. I'm trying to envision this....I have one pocket dipe that is a lined in suedecloth. Still the suedecloth gets wet even though it feels dry. SO if it was used as a shell, although it would feel dry wouldn't it still be wet? I know the soaker would cover most of it, so it would probably be wet just around the legs or something? Am I understanding this correctly?

What do you think would work for the soaker part? Maybe some sherpa or hemp?

I also love prints so do any of you have experience with the hidden layer of pul with a cute print outer? Did it work well, how was the wicking?

Thanks,
Kelli

I make reusable shell aio's and they work well for me - but I can only reuse the shell once more, before it tends to become wet.

I make a big square soaker of two layers of hemp, topped with suedecloth, which trifolds like a prefold. Any sort of trimmer soaker isnt absorbent enough and the shell gets wet right away.

I think it depends on the age of the baby. I can't successfully use any sort of AIO (pocket, snap-in, true, or otherwise) with Bobby, because he pees through everything and when he poops, there isn't an extra line of elastic to catch anything, and it gets on his clothes. But with Davey - a toddler with pretty solid poops and infrequent pees, who complains about diapers squishing his "narballs" - we've pared back to only AIO's. I've been using VB AIO's with him.

It helps to think about what bugs you about diapers, too, when you go to design your own. I don't like flappy things in diapers, so I try to design that sort of thing out. No snap-in soakers for me! But some people don't like stuffing pockets, or running a long dryer cycle, or what have you, so take into consideration your own pet peeves!

Thanks Ladies,
I appreciate your help with this. The more I think about it, I probably won't be doing the reusable AIO's, because I noticed on the diaper board that many people have wicking problems with those that have hidden pul.

I love prints so I'll probably do some cute diapers and find some sorta covers that work. Right now we are using Gerber plastic pants as our covers cause they don't leave red marks like my more expensive covers did. And while they are a bit big in the legs its not a problem now, it might be when she's older.

I'm pretty new to cding, she's only 2 months....but I do have some peeves....I don't mind the snap in soakers but I find that trifold soakers can be too bulky. I prefer aplix to snaps because I get a better fit. And I'm liking my cheaper diapers better than my $16 ones. The cheaper ones are much trimmer and have the aplix so I love them.

And that is too cute about your toddler and his squished "narballs". :LOL
