gearing up to sew...

I ordered the VB AIO pattern from the very baby site... has anyone else used this? How complicated is it? I've been sewing for a year or so now, but am basically self-taught. But, I LOVE the VB AIO's -- can I really save money by making them myself? I have two kids in diapers.

Where is the cheapest place to get materials for sewing diapers (the VB's and any other diapers in general?).

I have nearly two yards of microfleece that I won in ebay auctions... I know the VB AIO's don't call for it -- what could I do with it without a pattern? So far, I've just cut some of it up to use as liners...

I was visiting the fernandfaerie.com site, and they have several ideas for cheapskates like me . They suggest making diapers out of sweats, t-shirts and even jeans! I maed a pre-fold yesterday which turned out okay, but I haven't tried they diapers from jeans yet. The ones they have on the site are really cute, though

You can use the microfleece to make pocket dipes from the VB pattern. Jessica even has a website that shows you how you can do it. You could probably add it as an additional layer inside the AIO, but this may make it bulkier and increase the drying time. I haven't tried the pattern yet, but many mamas here have and love it.

Like the pp, I've made several dipes out of old t-shirts. They make for a trim, yet absorbant dipe (and hey, isn't that what we all really want?) Also, good old flannel works great. Here is a thread with a lot of fabric sites.

The first diaper I made was from the VB AIO pattern...I think that it is a great pattern to start with, it walks you through everything. I also agree with the pp, you should check out the VB supplemental pattern page, great instructions for making pockets and fitteds from the AIO pattern. I get most of my diaper sewing supplies from http://www.onestopdiapershop.com/ but I'll occasionally pick something up from a co-op or on clearance at Joann's.
