22 month old vomits after eating beans--used to be fine with them.

My 22 month old daughter has had vomiting and diahhrea episodes 3 nights in the past 2 weeks! Each time, she had had some of our hummus from our sandwiches. The first and 3rd time she also had had some kidney or pinto beans earlier in the day. She used to eat beans and hummus and be fine. We have decided to not let her have any beans or hummus for several weeks, although that will be hard because she wants to eat what we eat.

Does anyone have any idea of why she would be vomiting after eating these things? Like I said, she used to be fine with them, although in the past she didn't eat as much of them. The vomiting has been starting around 2:30am and lasting for around 4 hours.

Thanks!

sometimes allergies don't show up until later on in life. sometimes the body just can't handle one more irritant, like it reaches its limit and won't take it anymore.

If she is allergic to beans, you'll have to be real careful to avoid all kinds of legumes, including peanuts and soy.

I'd try posting in the allergies forum if I were you.

Yeah, I think I am gonna take it upon myself to move this over there. There are moms who know more about legume allergies and you will get alot more help.

If your daughter is intolerant of legumes and maybe other foods then the chances are that when her body reaches a certain level she reacts.... sort of like the bucket gets too full....

It is really difficult because of course, working out when the bucket is full is terribly hard

Where the amounts of legumes that she ate more than usual or was she eating them in combination with something new???

One thought would be to start a food diary - writing down what she is eating and quantities... this will allow you to track when food is causing a reaction and hopefully work out why!

Good luck! It is certainly a difficult one!

The first time it happened was when she ate almost a whole can of kidney beans during the day. So that was definately more than usual. At 2:00 in the morning she woke up with vomiting. The second two times were after she ate a normal to small amount of hummus or pinto beans during the day. Maybe the large amount of kidney beans set something off in her body so that now she reacts to just normal amounts?

totally unrelated but as a kid I became allergic to strawberries after eating two tubs in one day. : I was able to eat them again a few years after that. okay back to legumes

What might have happened is that she overfilled the 'bucket' so to speak - and sometimes once you have done that, because it has not alerted the system to the kidney beans as a 'problem' invader, then she is reacting to them all the time....

Keep her away from legumes for sometime and then slowly introduce them in say 6 weeks - tiny portions at a time - seeing if she reacts....

It's hard work but it might allow you to get to the bottom of it..... sounds like an intolerance to me.
