How would you compare raw sauerkraut with kefirkraut with regards to helpful bacteria? I haven't been able to find kefir grains locally yet but will give raw sauerkraut a try if it is at least almost as good.

Oh and I did find kids probiotics locally I haven't seen any obvious changes with Galen yet, but it has only been 4 days and at least it is helping his intestinal flora (Better be! That stuff is expensive!).

I would guess that the kefirkraut would have many more different species of organisms as the kefir grains do?

My husband is severely allergic to dairy and cannot consume cow's milk kefir, don't know how/if someone with a mild dairy allergy would react.

I assume that you have eliminated casein and whey ingredients from your diet also?

Anything topical that could be irritating? Perfume in lotion, or make up from your face touching his? Fabric softener in pillow cases? Shampoo? Lanolin?

Pet allergens? Grass allergens?

I am stumped.

Wow this is so ironic that this post came to my email at this point in my life as I've just started selling coconut kefir to my friends this week because no one is marketing it. If you go to www.bodyecologydiet.com you will find the recipe as well kefir starter you can order. All you really do is get the coconut water from the coconuts and then add the starter and let it sit for 36 hours and you've got non dairy kefir! I believe you can find out how to make authentic sauerkraut at www.mercola.com. If not let me know and I'll dig out my recipe.

I totally forgot. I heard that you can use organic virgin coconut oil on eczema! It is greasy. But it moisturizes, smells wonderful and apparently has some healing properties to it. Dh tried it on some patches of eczema on his abdomen. He wasn't consistent though, since it was so messy and he needed to wear dress shirts for work. I tried some on some dry cracked skin and after just a couple of nights, it was smooth and silky.

I take it that this probably means that he is not clear of allergens yet?
Same with my 7 month DD. No visible patches of eczema or cradle cap anymore, but the head scratching is still so bad she has to wear scratch mittens at night. No one can tell me what's going on!

As for the probiotics, I have a friend who puts a probiotic powder in bottles of expressed breastmilk and also on her nipple before bfing to help with her baby's digestion. I think it's working pretty well for them, and I might try this myself.

You can also do water/juice kefir, see this thread:

Or any other cultured veggies, not just cabbage, I like cucumber pickles and fermented roasted red peppers, recipes in Nourishing Traditions.
