WIC vent....not terrible, but worth mentioning

I had a WIC appointment today to pick up coupons. I signed in and the woman behind the counter asked if I was still bf'ing and I said yes. So, I get called around to the back to get my coupons. The woman handed me a paper and told me to fill it out. I didn't look at it before I started filling it out. Then I realized it was a sheet about weaning from the bottle! It had bits of info and reccommendations like, "don't let your baby walk around with a bottle" and "always hold your baby while giving a bottle."

It had two questions I was supposed to answer. Something along the lines of, "what are two things you can do to wean your baby from the bottle" and what are two things that weaning from a bottle can prevent?" I didn't answer them because they didn't pertain to me. The employee then told me I had to answer them. I told her that I didn't know the answers because I was bf'ing. She kind of gave me a weird look, like a "why does that matter" look and I said, "He doesn't get a bottle AT ALL. I don't know anything about bottle feeding." She said, "Oh, well that's good."

Was she just not listening when I told her I was bf'ing? Does she just assume breastfed babies get bottles anyways?

Also, why was she giving me weaning from a bottle info when my DS isn't even 4 months old?

The whole thing kind of irked me.

Hmmmm............It sounds like that worker was a bit confused? Why on earth, even if you were bottle feeding, wean from the bottle at four months old? Maybe she had a long day; sometimes WIC employees just run on autopilot after awhile since they are so used to dealing with a lot of moms who's bottle-fed babies end up with bottle rot, moms who both breastfeed and bottlefeed, and moms who don't know what they are doing and need help. She was probably doing just that and didn't pause to think about it. Either that or she REALLY needs to get her head checked.

WIC sucks around here for breastfeeding. I mean, really, officially they encourage it but they're totally clueless. Every time I go I hafta prepare myself for 20 minutes with someone who *thinks* they're an expert on breastfeeding but knows half as much as I do -- or less! -- about it. AND I have to put up with these people praising me for "doing so good" at breastfeeding!

And let's not forget such gems of information as "The later they start solids the harder it is to get them to start." WTF? You mean if I kept solids away from her till she was 2 she'd just refuse to eat, period? She'd starve herself to death? Well, it would save on the grocery bills. (On the other hand, if I'd started pushing the solids at birth she would've been doing all her own cooking from scratch by the time she was a month old.)

Maybe if WIC employees were a tad more educated about breastfeeding they'd have more breastfeeding clients.

Our local WIC is awesome- their director has even gotten herself certified IBCLC!! I am so happy for her and and the people served by their office! She is really dedicated.

Love Sarah
