My SIL is in labor with her 3rd. She did not bf her other 2 and I've been strongly encouraging and hoping and praying and giving her all sorts of advice so that SHE WILL BF THIS BABY!!!!!!! Everyone please please please pray and send positive energy her way!!!! This baby will need that good colostrum and bm because SIL has practically been pregnant for 3 yrs (her other 2 are 2.5 and 1.5 yo!) so this baby definitely is getting the short end of the stick nutritionally! Everybody pray, please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Update

Well, SIL finally had the baby this morning at about 1 o'clock. The stupid nurses gave her something to *make her relax* so she kept falling asleep while trying to nurse the baby. The nurses then took the baby and gave her a bottle of formula. I called SIL this morning and she said she didn't think she would have the time to be able to breastfeed, since she's supposed to be starting classes next week to keep her cash assistance. I'm so sad. And angry. And depressed. I cried after I got of the phone with SIL, both for her and for her daughter. They don't know what they're going to miss out on. I'm supposed to go see SIL this afternoon, but I'm afraid to go. I want to encourage her more to bf, but I don't want her to think I'm a "breastfeeding nazi" or trying to guilt trip her. I hate hospitals and medicated births. *sigh*

That's what I've told her, that any is better than none. When I talked to her this morning she was still all doped up from whatever the nurses had given her. I think she feels like it's too much work/inconvenience to even bother with it at this point, since baby has already been started on formula. It's so depressing that ff has become the norm, that so many ppl act like formula is just as good as bm. Blah. Blah. Blah.

How sad. Why is she being doped up?!?

oK, I just finished talking to MIL and then SIL. Well, SIL has a low pain threshold, so she asked for medication, but *this I am proud of* she tried to hold off as long as possible because I told her how much better it would be if she did it naturally. But, she ended up screwing herself over by doing that, she couldn't stay awake to nurse the baby after she was born.
Seriously, I want to start a breastfeeding campaign against this hospital. We live in one of the poorest states, but do they even bother trying to promote bfing? Noooooo, they wouldn't get any monetary perks from that, now, would they? :
I think I will be calling my LC and the local LLL leaders on Monday.
SIL said that now the baby has had formula in her system, no use trying to bother with bfing anymore. : I guess I'll be giving her the stupid cans of formula that were given to me along with the box of sage tea that I have to help dry up her milk rather than buying her some nursing pads.

This soon PP? That's the problem with government assistance - they do not offer any support to a new mother wanting to stay home with their baby. It's a bunch of bull sh*t! The government has an equal share in this mess as the dumb hospital. Is there ANY way to delay these classes?? Maybe it's time that groups come together and create a fund to help support BFing mothers....

I'm having the same problem with my friend. She has two little ones that were ff due to a hospital pushing breastfeeding way too hard on her when she had her first. The nurses all ganged up and yelled at her for NOT BFing(not a healthy way to promote BFing...) so she never had success at it. She's pregnant with her third, so I'm trying to shead some positive light on BFing.

for all!

When you said you lived in one of the poorest states I looked at your location to see if it was NM. I live in NM too. I saw on the news website a while back that the bf rates here are actually higher than the national average.

Back to topic though, I am sorry about your sil and the whole ff situation. It makes me sad too.

Woohoo!

oK, well, there may still be hope! SIL called me day before yesterday, while she was still in the hospital...She says "You will be happy..!" and goes on to tell me that the baby REFUSED to take the bottle for hours, and that she had spit up most of the formula she had been given. SIL said she finally put baby to breast and her dd took right to it! Woohoo! I haven't talked to her since that evening, I tried to call her last night, no answer. I told her how excited everyone was that she decided to continue trying to bf (MIL was very excited when she heard the news as well!) and that we were so proud of her.

Gidget, I'm surprised that the bfing rates here are higher than the national average. All the other bfing mommas must be in hiding!!!

I forgot to mention...they told SIL that she could take the baby with her to classes for a month maybe even two months as long as she didn't let her dd CIO. She said she's going to try to get longer than a week, though, before she has to start her classes. She's supposed to be getting her tubes tied sometime this month, but her paperwork is all messed up so they keep telling her all sorts of ridiculous stuff. Also, I'm not sure if the classes are for cash assistance or for her to get her GED....I'll try to ask her that today. We're going to try to go visit her today. I hope she remembers that bf babies nurse more often than ff babies!

Yay!

Well, SIL had her tubes tied day before yesterday. She's on heavy pain meds and cannot bf her dd while she's taking them. SIL says it's hard for her to not be bfing, and she now regrets not bfing her two boys. She's pumping to keep up her supply, and supplementing with formula until she can bf again. Unfortunately, her dd is having problems with the formula, doesn't like it, and keeps spitting it back up. I talked about it with SIL and we agreed I would pump some of my milk to give to her and see if she will take that any better. SIL is so eager to start bfing again, though! I'm so happy, and we've started to become very close, which is miraculous in and of it's self, considering some of the things that have happened between us, but that's another story!
You are quite the dedicated SIL/bfing advocate to pump for her dc! I'm happy to hear she's bfiing!!!!!
I am happy for her and her baby. Cool. Curious though. Why can she not bf? I had all mine by c-section and a tubal after Isaac and was able to bf with pain meds. I don't think that a tubal is any more invasive than a section.

I suppose the doctors here told her she couldn't bf because of the pain medication being dangerous for the baby. Everyone in the medical profession seem to know zilch about bfing in general, let alone bfing and medications. I'll ask her about this this afternoon, maybe see if she'll call and talk to an LC to see if they can offer any other information concerning meds while bfing.

Just have the LC check the bfing/med bible, aka "Medications in Mother's Milk" by Thomas Hale. LC's usually have that book, as well as most LLL Leaders.
