HELP!!!Nipple confusion

My SIL had her son early at 32 weeks.
At first they wanted to tube feed the babe because the Pediatrician said that is was neurologically impossible for the babe to suck. But seconds later the babe took a bottle....so he could suck! Yet, the idiots in the hospital insisted that he bottle feed and not breast feed. My MIL and I tried to convince SIL (very young on 19) that it is important that she BF even if she used a nursing supplementary feeding tube next to her nipple with pumped breast milk. We explained that if she didn't that babe would get nipple confusion....she did not take our advise. :
Now the babe will not take to the breast, just spits her nipple out.
I heard it is a good idea to use a breast shield but cut around the outer area so the babe’s nose can touch mama's skin and slowly cut more and more off every day until he takes the real thing. She has not been having much luck....any other ideas would be great!!!

I have no ideas but wanted to bump your post so others might see it. I so hope the babe gets to the breast!

I just remembered that Kellymom has some great tips for getting baby back to the breast. These and other tips are at www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/index.html I strongly recommend getting the help of a board-certified Lactation Consultant. There is a LC-finder function at www.breastfeeding.com.

Best of luck!

Heartsopenwide,
How old is the baby? Does she want to nurse the baby? It can be done with dedication but it has to be her choice. Skin to skin contact is good no matter what -- it has many benefits. Has your SIL been pumping to keep up her supply and if so, how often? If she is willing you may want to contact your local La Leche League for some support as well as come back here. Good luck! I hope your nephew is doing ok!!

give your SIL lots of love and support. Nipple confusion is so hard even when you're committed to nursing! It just hurts to have your baby push you away and cry for a bottle! Give her lots of hugs and encouragement, she'll need it!
