Need some quick back up....

I took J to the doc on Monday because he was running a very high fever and vomiting. The doc said that it was strep and told me not to nurse and give pedialyte instead for 12-24 hours, until the vomiting had gone away. Well I kept nursing him anyway and didn't say anything about it. Yesterday J started coughing a lot and during the night he began vomiting again, this time because of the phlegm. I'm taking him back to the doc today, not only because of the but because he is very, very, very cranky and has a rash on his face. I just feel like something isn't quite right. I know she is probably going to try to advise me not to nurse him for a time again and I would like to read a little so I can argue against it if and when she does bring it up.

I have to leave in an hour though.

You are absolutely right that breastmilk and not Pedialyte is the way to go. Breastmilk will hydrate better than Pedialyte plus has all the nutrition and immunological components to boot.

If your baby were FF, there would be a good reason to stop for a little bit because dairy is hard on the tummy when there's GI upset. *But breastmilk is not dairy.*

See http://www.kellymom.com/health/illne...y-illness.html (includes a link on breastmilk v. pedialyte)

You can try cutting the nursing sessions short and nursing more often for a day or so--just because that might cut down on the vomitting because there is less in the stomach to digest at any one time.

But Piedialyte? No, I have never used the stuff and I have 4 kids.

Also, breast milk is considered a "clear liquid."

With my middle child I nursed him and supplemented with formula. I had supply problems and he has sensory intergration disorder and had a diffcult time latching. One time when he was pretty sick like that I was told by a great Dr to nurse him as much as I could, and give him pedalite instead of formlua. She said it would help him witht he flem, but that breatmilk was the best thing I could give him. Besides just because she is a Dr, doesn't mean she is right or that you have to agree with her opinion. You do what you feel is best. I hope you little one feels better soon!

Thanks ladies, I printed the first link and highlighted specific portions and gave it to her. I told her that breastmilk and formula were completely different and while the advice she gave me might pertain to a formula fed infant, it does not to a beastfed one. She said something about bm being dairy and I pointed to the portion of the article that addressed it. She said she would read it and I hope she does.

I am glad that your doctor visit went ok. I hope your son is feeling better soon. I just wanted to add that although he is vomiting and it may seem like a lot coming up, chances are that he is absorbing some nutrition each time and getting more than you think. Good for you for following your instincts!
