So, is anyone else trying to go TV-free? - Page 3

Do occasional movies count?? I would say my boys watch a movie twice or three times a month. Once or twice a month a BabyEinstein (only 1/2 and hour) DVD and that's it. So it's definitely not part of their every-day life. In average, they watch a movie or a little program once a week...sometimes they go the whole week without it, and if at any other given time, it's too cold outside (winter time) or one of them is sick, they might watch a program twice a week. The never eat while watching, however they are allowed to have their sippy cups with water.

DH and I watch the news almost every night and every now and then there is a good movie on. I used to be addicted to Six Feet Under, but the latest season finished a while ago.

Oh, we live overseas so in a way -other than i-net- we keep track of what's going on in the world. And since politically there's a lot of turmoil lately, we've been having to stay indoors for more than a week now. At least the boys and I, so today as a treat, when the little one wakes up from his nap, and the older one is done with quiet/reading time, we might watch a movie together...I was thinking of Bambi. But if we get involved in something else, it might not even happen!

I don't know if what we do is considered as way too much...I like to think that it is not and that is not being bad for them at all...

They never watch regular TV or cable though. No way.

We're trying too!!!! So far its been great!!!! We have four boys and we have dramatically noticed the difference in them, plus we've noticed the difference in ourselves. I never thought we could do it but it does get easier with time. Now the thought of watching TV doesn't even appeal to me!

How's everyone doing with no t.v.?

Just checking in.

It's been months since my boys have watched t.v. Unfortunately, that is not the case with their parents : There have been days that I've been super tempted to sit them in front of the t.v., but luckily I've averted temptation so far.

Hope the inactivity of this thread means everyone is having a lot of fun outside.

We have been tv free for about 3 weeks now. I was expecting it to be a lot harder on dd (2 yrs) but I was pleasantly surprised.

It's been a lot harder on me. :LOL I hardly ever watched tv myself, but I used to use it to keep dd safe while I was in the shower. Now she takes a shower with me and it takes longer of course. But at least I know where she is. And it is helping us feel closer I think. Every morning when I would put on the tv for her and take a shower, I would feel so guilty and disconnected. I also found myself leaving the tv on for "just a little longer" each week. Like, okay, just a little longer so I can check email. Just a little longer and I'll start breakfast. Ugh.

The hardest part has been not using it for a little sanity break from dd, especially on days she doesn't nap. Or like the other morning, when I had a hard time dragging my tired pregnant self out of bed. Before, I probably would have put on PBS or a video. But I just kept laying there hoping dd wouldn't do anything dangerous in the other room. I needn't have worried. She kept coming in and jumping on me, throwing things on me to play with. :LOL

The benefits for us have encouraged me to keep going. DD's attention span and creative play have taken dramatic leaps. She is paying more attention to the illustrations in books (hungry for visual stimulation). I mean, really studying each and every detail! She did that before but not on this level. She also is more cheerful and less agitated.
The best thing is that I don't have to come out of the shower and see my little girl's eyes all glazed over and red. I want to see her natural spark and life interest there instead.

Now if I can just get dh to stop moping. He is out of books to read right now. He keeps jokingly sitting in front of where the tv used to be, staring at the wall. :LOL He's been totally behind getting rid of tv for dd's sake, though. He's planning to start watching dvd's on his laptop after dd goes to bed.
