I took the kids to a family fun event on campus and it turned out to be a bad idea. They had a pinata there and since dd was the youngest kid there, they let her hit it first. But she didn't understand what she was supposed to do with the stick, so I suggested another child show her. The second youngest kid hit it, and then gave the stick back to dd, but again she just stood there holding it and all the other kids were getting impatient. So I tried to get the stick away from her and give it to another kid, and dd just launched into the worst tantrum I had ever seen! She was trying to hit me and other kids with the stick, growling at me and spitting. So I just held her down on the ground while some of the other adults pried the stick away from her. I dragged her over to a corner away from the action, and people were taking pictures the whole time. So either someone is going to call CPS and say that I was abusive or we're going to be in the campus newspaper...
But I was trying to keep older dd with me, and I was holding the baby. I was trying to get the baby into the Ergo while older dd was thrashing around on the ground, head-butting me and biting my legs. Two women walked up and asked if I needed help getting the kids to the car. I said if they could just make sure dd didn't run off, I could put the baby in the carrier and we would be fine from there. So I got the baby settled and the women said they would be happy to take dd to the car for me, and I explained that I had stupidly parked 20 blocks away because I didn't think I could find parking on campus. The women said it was no trouble and one of them picked up dd and we walked all the way to my car!
I don't know what I would have done without them. It would have been miserable, that's for sure, and I could barely keep dd restrained. She might have run off if I had tried to handle her and the baby myself.
So if any of you see something like this, odds are you are not butting in or interfering if you offer to help. I have seen people struggling with their kids and just figured "Oh, they don't want my help, they'll think I'm calling them incompetent." But I sure was grateful.

That is so sweet- I love to hear stories of helpful, non-snarky people. That being said...
: :LOL
