I will never birth on dry land again

My #2 dd was a homebirth, and my #3 dd was a home waterbirth. No comparison! The birth was wonderful. We rented a Softub. Very comfortable. We kept it heated up and filled up. Since I went about 2 weeks over, it got drained and cleaned a few times. I was able to get in and relax every night for a while. This helped me to be familiar and comfortable with the tub. During labor, I left the tub to use the bathroom, and I was amazed at how much stronger the contractions felt. I practically jumped back in!

filling and refilling

I just had a thought, we have fish tanks and a nifty hose that we use for emptying and refilling the tanks (25% water change every month, that's the plan) Anyway, the hose isn't very expensive, and you could use it to remove water in the tub at home when it gets cold and add hot/warm water. You could empty and refill the whole thing with this hose. With just the flick of a switch. Hooks right up to the faucet and it has available extentions incase the initial part is too short.

We got more than our money's worth out of that tub (well- it was part of our m/w's fee so didn't really cost us...).

I started to go hypertensive the last month of pregnancy so our midwife hauled it over to our house and insisted I get in it once every day or two. It was kind of a pain in the butt, but dh was a total champ and set it up and drained it and cleaned it every single time (man, am I in love with this guy or what?) and it's very clear to me that it was instrumental in keeping the birth safe and us out of the hospital. Got in it a few times with ds1 (who was 2.5 at the time) which helped him to feel included in all this big deal, too.

As for the birth itself- I have way quick, hard labor and dh started fillig it as soon as we called the m/w- I had intense labor up until the point it finally filled and I got in, at which point things became SO much more relaxed- I got the urge to push within about 3 minutes and ds was born 2 pushes later. It was bliss. I'd never do it any other way.

Chloe, CONGRATS on the new babe! I've been watching your due date in your sig, wondering when the big day would come! I'll really have to try water birth next time I think. No more overheating in hot tubs for me!

Taylor, SofTub. Check.

Mystic, that is such a cool idea! Has anyone tried this?

Luna, you do have an awesome DH!

I had a CNM. It was just a hospital that has a birthing tub. No birth center. I was very lucky. I hope my next baby can either be at home, or in a birth center.

He was born on the 14th!

What do you think?
My experience has been ( as a doula and homebirth asst) that it is hard to plan specifically what position and where you are going to birth at home. Most women that plan a waterbirth, do get what they want. However , many women, like myself, had a tub set up and ready to go, and did not like the way it felt and birthed on a bed.
Thankfully, I knew that it is not for everyone, and did not buy a specific 'birth tub'. We had remodeled our bathroom during my pg anyway,so we installed a deeper soak tub- that would have been fine to birth in.
It was great for labor and immed postpartum for a soak with my new baby girl though.

i had a kiddie pool birth and had neither of these problems.

i got the aquarius pool online, just a slightly bigger size--78 inches across, b/c my dh is so tall and i am tall also. it was 24" tall and my whole body was covered and more than adequate length. i got the pool on closeout from last year for only $50! oh, as far as the temp goes, all you need are a couple of water bed heaters (they are a long rectangular plastic mat) under the pool--as long as it doesn't have an inflateable bottom, which i did not notice as uncomfortable at all. my pool stayed quite toasty through a very long labor...i was in about 10 hours.

btw, i used tea tree as my antimicrobial and also used greapefruit essential oil to give me a lify (love that stuff).

lol best part of my water birth was that my ex-dh (son's father) stayed over to be with son as i was in labor. next morning while me and new dd were in real bathtub, relaxing, HE emptied out the VERY uh, ORGANIC pool!

good luck!
