Could loose BMs be a symptom of allergies?

My ds is 18 months old and has been on solids since about 6 months. We introduced things slowly and never saw any reactions to any foods. He is a great eater - pretty adventurous and eats plenty.

He has, for the past four months or so, had very loose poops. Not diarrhea, but more what I would expect from an infant. Definitely not the kind of poop you can shake out of a diaper - more like the kind of poop you are constantly washing out of clothes from where it has leaked out of the diaper!

So, my question - should I be thinking fool allergy if these loose poops are his only symptom? We've never noticed anything else like a rash, or irritibility that would make me think his stomach is bothering him. He is generally a very good sleeper, too, and goes down about 1-1 1/2 hours after eating dinner.

We're starting to think about the most earliest stages of potty learning and I think it will be hard for him with such loose poops.

Thanks for your help!

No advice. I was just wondering the same thing except my son is 2 1/2. He doesn't have any other signs of allergies. He does have the occasional solid poo but 90 percent of the time it isn't.

Yep, that is a sign. Check his bum for a red ring around his anus, if that is there, it is a definate sign.

If your little one is still breastfed, that may still be keepin BMs softer than other babies the same age. My little guys have had food allergies though, as you explain. Finding the cause has been a huge help. A herbalist I know has suggested that other allergy symptoms will lessen when we get the digestive tract under control. When it is irritated all of the time , other allergens can enter your system easier.

For us, that was the indication of yeast.

Once we started intensive probiotics, fully formed firm stools appeared, with no more chunks of food. He was literally digesting his food better.

And DS was still BF 8x a day at that point. I do not think it's BM at all.
