She is breastfeeding.

I wonder if what women wear on the show also makes BW uncomfortable. As I am sure that there are a lot of female guests on the show that show a lot more chest than a breastfeeding mother does in public.

I am thankful that I start work when that show comes on. Although I will be having 6 weeks off of maternity leave this summer and I still don't think I will be watching that horrid show. It does nothing to help women.

oh great!

I rarely watch the show, but flat saggy boobs? Like a previour poster I went up a size with each child and I haven't nursed in 3 years and they are still there. Saggy, well they are not as perky as they were 20 years ago, but whose are at 40 something?

Hi everyone,
I don't usually post to MDC, just sort of lurk around for now... but this thread reminded me of something really interesting my aunt told me recently. She is the mother of twins and used to live in Saudi Arabia. They are VERY strict there in terms of a woman being covered up but when it comes to NIP it's a whole different outlook. She said if a woman needs to breastfeed she can do it anywhere and people just respectfully look away because the bond between a child and mother is considered to be so beautiful.
I found that pretty amazing considering in this country women are allowed to wear pretty much anything but NIP is considered immodest. I am Muslim myself and believe very much in modesty but I never felt weird about a woman who was NIP. In fact when my son was born 3 months ago and we began nursing, I felt like I would have no problem at all doing it discreetly in public (although we are still working on this because he starts thrashing around, guess its too much stimulation for him). It was only then, after talking to people that I realized that this is actually some sort of taboo in this society (and I've lived here all my life). I was really taken by surprise because I thought it was such a natural thing!
Anyways, just something I have pondering the last few days. Just thought I'd share!

I just emailed Barbara- I guess I am really disappointed as I had always liked her- I thought she was a "woman before her time" who broke open the role of women in the news- so I guess it makes me sad that she doesn't support breastfeeding...

another reason to not watch tv as another poster said....

miasmommy- happily nursing my beautiful 14 month old DD

misiddig - that is so informative! Thank you.

I wrote a letter to BW but she probably won't read it I'm sure.

I didn't get to see it b/c I was at an LLL meeting! I NEVER watch the View b/c I am not a big fan of any of the "ladies" and they usually tick me off but I wanted to watch b/c a digital scrapbook kit designer who posts on another board I visit was in the audience... she said she had a good time and was all excited about it but I don't think I would go even if I was going to get a ton of free stuff. Blech.

I just don't get why there is such a negative attitude towards BF. Honestly, I don't.

I've been wondering, if BW could remember being born, what would she say? I'm sure something along the lines of,"OMG, it was sooooo disgusting. All those bodily fluids!!!! And she pushed me out of WHERE?!?!"
I, too, don't understand how NIP could be consider "inappropriate" or "disgusting" Women (and men) show tons more skin on the big screen, and even the little screen...it's alright if it's sexual in nature, but not if it's nurturing?! Ugh.

Welcome msiddiqi!

I have seen a photograph in a book about breastfeeding (either Milk, Money and Madness or the Politics of Breastfeeding maybe?) a photo of a Middle Eastern Muslim woman covered head to toe in her traditional religious garment. Her breasts were exposed fully to her nursing child...not her face, not her elbows, but only her breasts. The text said no one seemed to notice.

My American friend who married into a Middle Eastern Muslim family told me the same thing...that covering up is the tradition, but does not include nursing breasts in the country her dh's family comes from.

I hate the View. I think it is awful. What is her problem?

Did she ever respond?

Does anyone know if she ever responded on the show? I never received an email response- not that I really expected to but I thought she might respond on the show.

re: star jones' ignorance...

Okay, so this refers to what was mentioned on the first page of this thread, but anyway... I remember a show a while back where they were talking about c/s for some reason, can't remember. Anyway, her brilliant comment was "Aren't c/s safer anyway??" Grrrr.... The comment was kind of dismissed b/c it was time to move on to the next topic and frankly, no one could really answer.

I'm glad that you all think they're idiots b/c I always felt that way too!! I used to watch, but it doesn't come on here, or at least I always miss it. Thomas videos are usually what's playing in the AM at our house...

So was E. showing off her boobs specifically or something?? Before and after shots?? I'm confused why everyone's commenting on how great they are now...???

I so dislike Starr Jones, and this was before she said anything about childbirth or breastfeeding. Reading this other stuff just angers me even more.

cross post with Television

I have posted a list of advertisers who showed commercials on the View today. See post number 185, page 10, of the thread called "Barbara Walters "offended" by BIFP" with the link posted below.

If you have been offended by Barbara Walters bashing nursing in public,

or upset when a View host announced how wonderful it is that Elizabeth is stopping breastfeeding and switching to baby formula, and encouraging the audience to applaud,

or are sick of Star Jones bashing breastfeeding on the show, you can tell the advertisers what you think!!!!

These are the TV commercials I saw today on the View on ABC TV, Monday, May 30, 2005 (Memorial Day.) Hopefully I haven't made any mistakes.

If you can't find the list please PM me.
