Ick, Ick, Ick, ER episode last night... - Page 2

The L Word is a series on Showtime similar to Queer as Folk, only with lesbian characters instead of queer male characters. It's a great show, if you ask me... but the birth pissed me off.

The ICAN mamas were talking about this as well. And a few of us were wondering how a Symphysiotomy was done, someone found this site:

That looks extremely barbaric!

After, the look on Ray's face and his mention of the Symphysiotomy to Abby, he looked so impressed with her *puke*.

She may have had a possible spinal injury, but yet the way her legs were up and bent back, cannot be any better for her than just going on all fours. ykwim.

So Neela gave her a HUGE episiotomy first? I didn't catch that part.

digusting all around!

OMG. I just read what a Symphysiotomy entails. I think I will have nightmares.

Just another side thought there.

And I too would like to know what The L Word is?
I am not surprised they didn't have her change her position, and not just becasue of her injury or the ER show, but because I have hardly ever heard of OB's in real life in L&D get a woman to change position. Even for shoulder dystocia, they try to manage it keeping the woman on her back with her legs up ion the air Do I just work in the most messed up place or is this typical around the country?

I think it is funny, and typical for a show like that, that they would come up with some obscure procedure to try before the obvious.

The whole thing was awful, I was allready disgusted by it, but now learning about the symphysiotomy, I am truly sickened. Of course, I had to go to the link above and learn about the procedure. I suffered from PSD and can only imagine the permanent damage that this procedure would inflict on a woman. I hate television! (ok, and hospitals, but that is another story!)

I brought up the huge episiotomy concept...an episiotomy was not shown or discussed on the show at all.

I was just theorizing that the FIRST thing an MD would do if baby got stuck would be to snip a generous episiotomy and then, when baby still wouldn't come out, Neela asked for Abby.

So that was my theory.

I checked out the how-to link posted above, and mediolateral episiotomy is suggested (and the authors note if a standard midline episiotomy has been performed make it bigger.)

I am annoyed that the gory symphysiotomy was performed and discussed on the show without any mention of the equally gory yet frightfully common episiotomy.

Also, that helpful how-to link points out this post-op gem: mom should have a urinary catheter for a minimum of 5 days.
