Yes. By a "pacifist" like you, he was called a baby killer. For going out, risking his life on the Pacific, where there were other GROWN ADULTS who volunteered for the same thing he did...

Sorry but I have a hard time respecting pacifists....especially since they dont realize the sacrifices made to keep THEIR butts safe from the greed and tyranny of others.
By a "pacifist" like me? Come on. A pacifist like me would not do that. I have lost a little respect for you from this thread. No one here is attacking you. No one here is calling your dh a baby killer. I'm truely sorry someone would do that. It accomplishes nothing but to pull people further to the extreems.

I adhere to the philosophies of Jesus, Ghandi, Mendela and MLK jr. Their lives and deaths changed whole countries without the use of violence. The reason why you may ask? Well, I think it was because their causes were just.

World War II happened because people turned a blind eye to the suffering of those around them. The Jews made great scapegoats. Do you think Hitler could have done what he did without the coorperation of millions of ordinary people? They (we) could have woken out of the facist dream they were in and by not turning a blind eye, could have nonviolently refused to contribute to the killing going on around them. The power was there to end the atrocities of Hitler without adding the atrocites of WWII.

The Iraq war is just another in the long list of countries we have tinkered with in our best interest. Those countries' best interest be damned. Do a google search on school of the americas, legacy of agent orange in our little Vietnam war, uranium in weapons now in use, TP-AJAX (usa involvment in the Iran coup) just to name a few. We can hardly take the high moral ground on our military record.

The taliban is alive and well in Afghanistan. Outside of the capital it gets pretty dicey. In Iraq, low-grade civil war is going on. Saddam is a but does that make the fact the country is in chaos because of our military choices acceptable? We could catch and kill Osama today and it would not matter. We set the cycle up for hate to beget more hate.

In the end, we all reap what we sow.

Well that's what buddy said "I'm a pacifist and you're nothing but a baby killer" or something like that....

And about the Taliban being alive and well, Dont I know it, I have friends in Afghanistan right now as I type this, fighting to out them. Boys I BABYSAT when I was younger are out there risking their butts so the average Afghani can just go to sleep at night without worrying that some zealot will come in and take his wife for showing a bit of ankle or looking at another guy or beating the crap out of HIM because he couldn't keep his woman contained.

Trust me I know very well that the Taliban is out there. They dont WANT progress.

It's hard for the general Afghani populace to act non-violently when they are terrified, supressed by violence and terror....That's when they need help.

In WW2, yes people turned a blind eye to the suffering, because they themselves didn't want to be put in the place. Looking out for #1. Hitler had guns and tanks and rockets and airplanes and all sorts of wonderful things that made people into corpses...If the people revolted and stood up without equal might backing them, they would have gotten seriously served to put it lightly...that's when the coalition of Britain, Russia, Canada (and eventually) the USA came in to play, to give the ordinary citizens of Europe a way to fight back, some HELP to rise up against the tyranny.

That's what we are doing in Afghanistan now.

We as in Canada...btw

I believe that the USA moved against Iraq at the wrong time. Saddam had time to kill all his naysayers (or imprison them) and stick those loyal to him in power. He had all the time in the world to make it so there were more people loyal to him than disloyal. And when a force goes in to aid a country, you really really want the populace to be loyal to you. THAT is the main reason why things are going screwy in Iraq now.

Let's just say, if the West invaded North Korea right now, we wouldn't have a chance. The populace is rabidly in favour of Kim Jong Il. Either by fear, or by honest to goodness love for their leader...Kim Jong Il is another madman..
