i'm up in canada, can't go to the nurse-in. but, here's the letter i sent:

Good morning, Elisabeth, and congratulations on the birth of your wee Grace! I hope things are going well. I recall being a new mom and feeling overwhelmed.

I wanted to comment on your "Grace has proudly graduated to formula" statement. I feel really saddened that you, a mom who has some celebrity, would make such a comment, which clearly implies that formula is *better* than breastmilk. We know that breastmilk is alive and provides innumerable short- and long-term benefits for baby, mom, and the environment.

Despite formula companies' best efforts to create 'new and improved and more-like-breastmilk' formulas, there will never be an artificial baby milk that contains all the compounds and benefits of breastmilk.

Your choice to use formula is just that, your choice, and your business. BUT when implying that moving to formula from breastmilk is a wonderful milestone, you are displaying ignorance.

I hope that other mothers are not swayed by your comment, for, as we all know, breastmilk is the single best food for human infants.

Your baby is lucky that you breastfed her. Any amount of breastmilk is better than none, and that's a gift you have given her.

I hope you stay well.

K

edited to add that i re-emailed elisabeth to acknowledge that i was mistaken in attributing the comment to her, rather than to her cohost. i mis-read something : i did send her support. i hope she continues to share this gift of bf with her daughter.

cross post with Television

I have posted a list of advertisers who showed commercials on the View today. See post number 185, page 10, of the thread called "Barbara Walters "offended" by BIFP" with the link posted below.

If you have been offended by Barbara Walters bashing nursing in public,

or upset when a View host announced how wonderful it is that Elizabeth is stopping breastfeeding and switching to baby formula, and encouraging the audience to applaud,

or are sick of Star Jones bashing breastfeeding on the show, you can tell the advertisers what you think!!!!

These are the TV commercials I saw today on the View on ABC TV, Monday, May 30, 2005 (Memorial Day.) Hopefully I haven't made any mistakes.

If you can't find the list please PM me.

Hi there, I'm mostly a lurker on these boards, but I did get invaluable help from you ladies when I was trying to get my then preemie to latch. Btw, he did, and he's been nursing for a year now! I'm from San Francisco, but I actually will be in NYC visiting my sister next week. So, I'm coming with my 1 year old! I hope somebody else will be there! Should we bring signs or something? I think we should try and get some attention, right?

Why 11am? The pages come for the audience at 9:30am. I'd start nursing then, so that word would make it up to the producers/hosts by taping at 11am.

Ken keeps saying that I need to take a vacation. My mom works for American Airlines...so getting there wouldn't be a problem...but transportation and lodging would be...unless I drove and The View would put me up in a hotel. :LOL

Hmmm...must ponder. But I only have a week, eh?

Hmmm....think think think....

so when exactly will this be? I never watch the view but I will absolutely watch when ya'll so in there!

PO'd that they never responded!

SO wish I could join you ladies... I so wish that Elisabeth & Barbara would respond... I emailed them & no response & the funny thing is is that they WANT some hot topics to talk about on their show... I think I will email Meredith- she seems the most "normal" of the group... I am disappointed in Elisabeth- she actually addressed the Republican Natnl. Convention ( I know, ugh!) & spoke about breast cancer ( her Mom is a survivor)- curious if she knows that breastfeeding is linked to lower rates of breast & ovarian cancers? I included that in my email to her.

Now I will email the sponsors....thank you Momtwice!

It's a good idea. Though I can't imagine my 3yo and 1yo will be able to hang out in the same place on the same street for that long ... not to mention be able to nurse for that long ... :LOL

You know how people take pics of their friends & put them on signs to try & get them on TV at the today show??? It would be hysterical to take nursing pics of all us mamas who can't come. It could be a virtual crowd! :LOL
post #39 of 602
That would be funny. Maybe we could send pics to the view.

with you in spirit, wish we could be there..................
