Dog question again

My Lhasa Apso has yet another ear infection. I called the vet's office to see if I could pick up some medication, and was told that I would have to have an office visit first. At $48, for them to look in her ears, say yes, and hand me a bottle, which costs extra. I don't think so.

So, any otc stuff for a canine ear infection?

I'm no expert, but have dealt with a dog having easily infected ears before.

Are the infections inner ear or on the outer-inner ear (make sense?)? Have you tried trimming her fur around her ears REALLY short? (This cured my dad's cocker mix's ear problems...keeping the fur around her ears shaved.)

Are you going to be in the Milton area any time soon?? I've got lots of ear meds here. I'd like to take a peek (and more importantly a sniff) to see if it may be yeast. Ear yeast usually causes a stinky peanut butterish looking goo.

One of my old sheps had chronic ear problems and the dermatoligist had me start cleaning them every other day with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and betadine--worked better than any other meds we'd tried.

Polysporin makes an ear/eye drop that isn't bad, but sometimes it can end up just causing the bacteria to be more resistant because it's not that strong.

Another thing that helps--especially if it's yeast is to make your own drops, 1/2 tea tree oil and 1/2 sterile water, apply the drops 3 times a day for 10 days.

JoAida, when she gets groomed her ear hairs get removed, but it doesn't seem to matter much. There is no discharge that I can see, ears are just red and itchy.

What about expressed breastmilk?!?! It works for babies with ear infections.

That will work, I've got an appt with her for Molly and I at I believe 10:30, so I'll meet up with you there. Make sure Marlene adjusts her neck up high, sometimes that helps with ear issues.

The doc needs to see if it is a bacterial or yeast infection in order to prescribe the appropriate meds. If you have any oticlens or another drying ear cleaner I would start using it twice a day. Unless her infection is mild, she will need an ear irrigation to remove the pus and debris. Otherwise the meds won't be able to touch the infection. Most people don't try this at home.

I also have a few dogs with ear probs.
There are Otic washes you can buy OTC & I of my Vets said you can clean out the ears with a vinegar/H2O solution also.
Yeast ears can be a real bugaboo to clear up @ times

The meds they gave her before were for both bacterial and viral, as they didn't know what it was.

What was she put on last time? Surolan? Panalog? Most of the current ear meds cover just about everything that would commonly be causing an ear infection. With a flop eared dog it's more than likely a yeast thing. Chances are it hasn't been treated for long enough in the past.
