I'm looking for nice little poems, verses, etc to use as "memory gems" for my first grader. Any ideas?

Something to memorize? Is that what you mean?

Yes. A short little poem or verse each week to memorize, and maybe later use for copywork, or to write on cards or letters.

How About The Goops

The Goops they lick their fingers
The Goops they lick their knives
They spill their broth on the table cloth
Oh they lead digusting lives

The Goops they talk with their mouths full
And loud and fast they chew
And that is why I am glad I am not a Goop
Are you?

The author is unknown as far as I have reseached. This poem was one of my childhood favorites and I have yet to meet a child who can resist it Ds always grins mischeviously (sp?) and says yes me a Goop :LOL

The Goops is by Gelett Burgess (sp???) http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...books&n=507846

How about the purple cow verse? Cool! I always liked it, just googled it and found the Goop author wrote it! http://www.notfrisco.com/calmem/burgess.html
I never knew that

I never saw a purple cow
I never hope to see one
But I can tell you anyhow
I'd rather see than be one!.
