well at least with prefolds you are allowed to post a pic. My homemade fluff can only be posted in Crafts (didn't think there was enough controversy here )

I think this gets the the whole point of the problem - the thread wasnt made fun of because it was about someone using prefolds, it was made fun of (or ridiculed) because it was perceived to be making fun of the forum at which point diapering regulars took offense.

I think a huge number of the diapering forum regulars are CPF users and there is tons of discussion about CPFs on a regular basis. No one is ever made fun of for chosing simple CDing.

The thread was made fun of out of people being defesive for feeling made fun of.

Wow, this thread is so long already!

I will try to address some of the issues.

Re: the thread that was pulled last night. Nothing wrong with posting pics of diapers of any kind or talking about flats/prefolds, etc. There were two reasons it was pulled:

1) name-calling and sarcasm
2) off-topic chatting

I recognized it as a joke and thought it was rather funny. The posts that followed, some of them at least, were not that friendly or on topic. Things were taken personally, people were offended. So the thread got moved and eventually pulled.

Re: making peace with hyenas vs. non-hyenas. We have actually been discussing that for awhile and are just working out the details. We too, feel that there needs to be a place for simple diaper talk and another place for hyena talk. Please be patient, changes are coming.

In the meantime I would strongly encourage everyone to read and review the rules in the Diapering forum. Half of the problem is that very few users actually read or understand the rules. We are trying to keep this busy forum running smoothly and it helps if everyone is on the same page as far as the rules go.

I'm still reading this thread. Gethane-that's a seriously good point. See, I was using Ian's dipes on Zach and recycling them into homemades that would still fit and work. I can't talk about that on diapering. It goes in arts and craFTs. Well, that is a super uber FRUGAL, Reduce/reuse/recycle, all about NFL way to diaper, and we Can't even talk about it in diapering!!!!!!!!! :

If you think about it, mostly those who don't diaper simply are made fun of, not the other way around. I would never ever make fun of someone who uses prefolds but man, have people said some crazy things to me about my stash.

I am uneasy with this. More than uneasy. I think it is ridiculous so classify those of us the CD into one or the other group. I would also want to know who decides what is hyena and what isn't? MDC? MDC's advertisers?

I'll be watching but if you shove all the hyenas into some elitist category I will not be posting in diapering anymore. It will be interesting to see what you guys come up with. Good luck, and I mean that sincerely!

Hee hee -- used diapers (which get used for, uh, crap) are for "arts and craps." Hee hee.

Okay, okay, I'll grow up...

I agree w/ some of the others and just dont see how that would work. CDing and the world of WAHM's, auctions, etc. is just too dynamic for that to work.

I started out CDing my son from birth w/ the total basics and didnt come to MDC til he was 6 months old. I think most of us who are regulars on the diapering board started out simple and got into the more elaborate stuff from being there a while and learning about it. I dont think its fair to assume that all newbies are coming to the board only wanting to keep things as simple as possible - for lots of us CDing is not only part of NFL but also a hobby and something we enjoy.

I dont think it accomplishes anything but to further the segregation this thread is saying is wrong.

...and for once, I wasn't trying to be a smart tail. I didn't even realize I wrote that. I meant craFTs. :LOL

I rarely post but have been reading the MDC forums for nearly six months now. Thus, a little background: I was planning on cloth diapering long before happnening on the MDC diapering forums. I was even excited to see a place where I could find more information. I'm even a fabric snob (a seamstress of sorts on my spare time for garment making) and like quality (and organic) as much as anyone.

BUT, I have to say that the quote above is what strikes me every time I dare to venture into the diapering forum. Its overwhelming as an outsider to have to sort through a page of posts of what is self described hyena behavior in order to gather middle of the road or simple diapering information. If people want to collect and be self described hyenas, then so be it. We all have our "vices". I even applaude what that does for certain WAHM's business. BUT, MDC ought to consider what they want the face of cloth diapering to be for those who don't know how crazy the hyenas can get (and that is a good portion of those on MDC and a greater portion of mothers whom most on the forum would like to see convert to cloth).

If I had a vote, I'd say seperate out the "show off" and "newly stocked" threads into a hyena folder. That way questions about the basics of cloth diapering, how to care for them, what types are available, etc at all price points won't fall soo quickly.

We have not come up with a firm plan yet, so don't get all upset just yet. We feel a need to have a place where newbies can come and not be overwhelmed. When I was new to cloth diapering and just doing prefolds/pins/pull on covers, I stepped into diapering (which was not even that exciting back then) and was totally overwhelmed. I have converted several mamas but whenever I suggest MDC diaper forum they all say, "Oh that place was too confusing. I didn't know what they were talking about." and most of them never come back again. That is really sad.

There needs to be a compromise. There needs to be some way to make this work. If you have any ideas on how to make both newbies/basic diapering mamas and the hyena crowd both comfortable in Diapering, feel free to share them.

I think it would be most beneficial actually to have a subdivision that deals with posts about stockings, or purchases, or posting pics....as opposed to the main diapering forum being reserved for questions and general how-tos and problems with day-to day diapering. What is a good night diaper? as opposed to When does FM stock again? I don't think you can compare it to other forums because I think it is a unique situation. Feeling left out in TAO or like your political views are in the minority in News and Current events doesn't take away from anyone trying to live simply or naturally. Wading through post after post of store stockings and sales and feeling like only unique and expensive options are applaudable and/or praise worthy may keep someone from getting information they need to CD. Not attacking anyone at all...just putting in my .02 since it seems they will be looking to this thread to get a feel for what to do with the diapering forum.

What about a "diapering basics" forum, for questions/help in regards to general diapering. Stuff like "what's the best way to fold a flat?" and "front snaps or side snaps-which do you prefer?" etc. could go there. A separate "diaper chit-chat" could be geared more towards show offs and stockings. That way it's not simple vs hyena. Just thinking "out loud" here

That's what I get for not hitting refresh after leaving the computer for few minutes lol. Yeah, that's what I was thinking too.

I think you make some good points. It isn't even so much about hyena vs not hyena. It's the "let's rush and buy this! look what I have! look what I scored!" that gets to me- these things have absolutely nothing to do with the practicality of cloth diapering. It's one thing to say "Is brand XYZ good for night?" or "Are Chubbybums trim?" but another to be promoting buying $300 covers on a board where others might be coming for practical information.

I think that's a great idea. Part of the problem I think is that people go to the diaper board for basic info and their questions get lost among all the stockings and fluffly mail threads. I'm not saying there are anything wrong with those threads - I've enjoyed them myself - but it would be nice to have regular questions / concerns seperated from that kind of stuff.
