books for beginning readers

My dd is starting to read on her own and I'd like to encourage that with some fun books. She liked reading the stories on the Starfall site http://www.starfall.com/n/level-a/le...ead/load.htm?f

What books have your beginning readers loved?

DD enjoys the Little Bear books, and the Frog and Toad books. They are a little more challenging than, say, the Bob Books, but the stories are enjoyable and the illustrations are pleasing. DD can't read them independently, but she can read them with help.

(and hello from another family of three )

For *very* easy reading, my dd enjoyed the "Adventures of Otto" books by David Milgrim. The first one is See Otto. There is also Ride Otto, Ride and Swing Otto, Swing, and I think one or two others.

As you can tell from the titles, the content is a little "Dick and Jane"ish but Otto is such an adorable little robot and the books are really pretty funny in a simple sort of way. At my library they were in the "Easy Reader" section, which is arranged in an odd sort of way, making specific books kind of hard to find. You might have to ask a librarian for help if yours is the same way.

For slightly more advanced reading, I second the recommendation of Little Bear and Frog and Toad. Actually just about anything by Arnold Lobel is good. There have been others she enjoyed at that stage as well, I just can't think of them at the moment! Congrats to your dd on learning to read!!

Dr. Suess rules!!

Other than that absolute favorite, my early readers raid the reader section at the library and nearly always find treasures. I can't remember one particular set being a lovie really.

As a beginner reader, we worked our way through Bob books. She has just recently begun reading by whole-words, and doing really well. A few that she can read without help but might be fun with help would be (along the lines of Frog & Toad):

*Rotten Ralph series (they're grosser, which she liked)
*Amelia Bedelia
*Bug House, Snug House (and others in this series)
*Corduroy reader series
*I can Reads from long ago (A Fly Flew By, Dr. Seuss, etc)
*Others that I picked up at the local Goodwill - a source I highly recommend for getting cheap books if your library doesn't have a good collection - they go through them pretty quick at this age.

thanks for the replies!
I'll have to see if we can find some of those books.

DD also loved the Poppleton books when she was a very early reader.
