Does the Senate still have to approve the bill? It seemed implied in the last pararaph. That would be great if it passed.

Yea I think so. This is a step we've been at before, so fingers crossed.

But Rep. Phil Barnhart, D-Eugene, said without tests there's no way to detect which students aren't doing well.
Yeah, because of course their parents would have no idea!

ooh...fingers crossed for you here too. That would be so great. I still don't get why kids not in school are expected to be tested via school tests. It just doesn't make sense.

Yea I know... imagine that, the parents having a some clue about how their kids are doing? And how are they defining "doing well" anyway? Because if it's by school standards I have a few ideas about which words might be more accurate than "well"

You are so lucky! I am seriously considering the bait and switch someone suggested her- one year he is in second grade, the next year, what do you know, he's in fourth.

Good luck. I'll be watching this thread for the news. Please keep us updated.

I'm in NV. We use to have testing here and they did away with it. Why? Because hsers always test well! It was a big waste of money and time for the state.

Let freedom ring.

That's awsome! I hope it passes!

Did NV actually pay for the testing? IN WA, the tests are required, but the parents have to pay. I don't actually mind having my son tested, but I object to having to pay for it when the state requires it.

I imagine the testing is a source of embarrassment for the state, since hsers usually outperform the ps kids.

Although I'm not certain I'm pretty sure that Nevada paid for the testing and seeing that it was a big waste of money got rid of it. Homeschoolers test better than public school students and they never had a child "fail" a test so they did away with it.

It is rediculous that you should have to pay for something that the state requires. You all need to get together to fight this.

Any update on Oregon?

In my experience (we've only had to test once...Dd 3rd grade) it depends on your tester because she/he set the price. Our tester charged less if she could do (test) a group of homeschoolers in the same grade at once. If she was just doing your kid it was more. My luck, we got in late and we were the only ones needing a grade 3 test. It cost us around 60.00 bucks.

I have no idea if that is common or if it varies depending on what test you decide to go with and your county etc.

If this passes, we may just go ahead and register the kid!

Naaaaa!

How active are the homeschoolers in Oregon in participating in the leg. process? Is everyone getting together to make a lot of noise? Last time there was a bill in our leg. the reps said they got over three hundred e mails and more than 50 homeschoolers with their children in the lobby. One of those emails was from me. Needless to say we won. I did not take my children to the session but I bet it would be very educational. I know families that did take their children and said it was interesting to watch. Do homeschoolers in your state participate in this way?

If you don't I encourage you all to get very LOUD The reps really do listen to what you have to say. Just showing up in large groups says a lot. Does your state organization have a lobbiest?

I checked out the HSLDA link provided and it looks very positive. Good luck you guys and post an update.
