I still can't believe it! Wow!

I am pleased as punch to announce the safe arrival of Abigail Elizabeth
Prowell at 1:50 p.m. on Thursday, 5.25.05. Abby is doing wonderfully, and I'm great as well!

Birth story in short: Our 9 lb., 4 oz. li'l one surprised no one more than me with her eagerness to enter the world -- she barely gave us time
to arrive at the birth center, and chose the bathroom's tile floor to
make her debut.

I say no one was more surprised than me, because my first child (Abby's our second) took 48 hours to bring into this world (35 hours of dilation under hard active labor; 6+ hours of pushing; and eventual transfer to the hospital for forceps assistance!).

Abby's birth was almost completely opposite in every way. I woke up Thursday morning after a fine night's sleep and felt a little crampy. I wondered if labor was starting (it was the day before my due date, and my son's birth had started the same way--upon awakening, with mild menstrual-like cramps.) As the morning progressed a bit, the sensations started feeling more like contractions. I called my husband at work around 8:30 to tell him how I was feeling. We agreed to talk again in an hour or so to see if things were progressing. At 10 a.m. we spoke and I asked him to come home. The ctx were stronger and requiring me to focus during them. He got home by 11; we decided to leave for the birth center at 12:30; we arrived there at 1:00 (we had to take a ferry--we live on an island outside Seattle!); and then Abby was born at 1:50 p.m.!

My water broke within minutes of arriving at the birth center, and then I felt "pushy" immediately. I pushed for 8 minutes (4-ish ctx), and then she was born! I was squatting on the floor in the bathroom when she emerged! I was--and still am--just in shock at how fast and well everything went.

I had some postpartum hemoraging issues, but the midwives had those under control by later that night and so we came home. Abby is absolutely the loveliest thing in the world, and I'm feeling so much better than I ever could have imagined . . . I feel more blessed than is humanly possible. I can't tell you all how wonderful this feels. I am afraid to break the spell.

More later. Fabulous labor vibes (and much patience) to all those out there still waiting for their little bundles of pure bliss.
