When to interview midwives?

We're not even TTC yet (but will be in Nov/Dec) and I'm wondering when (and how) to start interviewing midwives. I had a disappointing hospital birth with an OB and plan to have a MW attended homebirth with the next dc. Any advice?

I would suggest asking around IRL and online around the time you TTC and get together a list of midwives you want to interview- then start interviewing once you get a

I didn't find my HB midwife until I was 20 weeks along (realized a hospital birth was NOT going to be ok for me) and it still worked out beautifully and I feel like I got to know her very well even though I got with her a bit late.

The last area we moved to I asked around at the time of my annual gyn appontment. I wanted to see if I could get in with a doctor that was supportive of her. The midwife was nice enough to talk to me a long time on the phone and I actually got to meet her at the gyn appointment. Unfortunately we moved after being there a year and hadn't even started ttc yet.
This time we just started going to the homebirth meetup to see what our options were. I live in a state where cpms and lay midwives are illegal but if you poke around enough on the Internet you can find lots abouta particular midwife's beliefs and practices even before interviewing.

I think i would do some researching now and contact when you are ttc as well. I know that I was caught by surprise with dd and spent way too much time stressing out over a midwife which is why I started looking for one before even thinking about ttc with this one.

I found my mw when we decided to start ttc, it ended up taking 18 months, but what I really liked was that I already knew who was going to be the mw, so I didn't need to start looking when preg. I think it's never too early.

We made calls & set up interviews the first month we were TTC. I had collected names & numbers before that. With dd (hospital birth), we didn't find anyone until around 14 weeks, and while I know (& even knew then) that I was doing just about as much as they would (eat well, take a prenatal... the only things 'missing' were bp and bloodwork), I liked having everything 'decided' ahead of time, plus I had someone to call (okay, actually email) when I had some spotting around 8 weeks.

I interviewed a midwife a month and a half ago. Dh and I won't even be ttc until maybe this fall, but now it's looking more like winter (financial issues). I wanted to have our ducks in a row so I'm not trying to do that kind of thing with a busy toddler and mood swings.
She was fine with that, although a little surprised because I wasn't pregnant. I my midwife, and have since done a pap and ds's well-baby visit there.

I'll agree with all the PP's who said it's never too early. When you want to start interviewing, go for it! Besides, you never know if you're going to be one of the few that has really rough morning sickness. It's hard to think clearly when you feel so ill sometimes.

I'd planned to interview midwives a few months before TTC. I'm sitting here 8.5 wks pregnant, interviewing one tomorrow. The best laid plans, ya know

We thought we were really on the ball because planned on interviewing midwives in November/December (as well as getting my yearly, etc...) and TTC jan 1. Well, when we interviewed the midwife we ended up picking we were actually already pg (ended up taking a home pg test Jan 1). Never too early, IMO. You can make a decision while not totally hormonal and you will be *sure* that she has space for you (since you can tell her right when you find out).

Thanks for all the advice ladies...now I'll just have to stave off these hormones for another 5-6 months!
