swimming, chlorine, and no 'poo

I've just started on the no 'poo journey. Dh has been no 'poo for 2 months.

What happens when you go to the pool? What does the chlorine do?
Do you have to bs wash more frequently? Is there a way to protect hair?

Soak your hair w/cold water before you swim, slather on some conditioner if you want (it prevents the chlorine from reaching the hair shaft) and wear a swim cap if you can. After swimming, rinse with warm water for a few minutes, then with cool. Chlorine doesn't make your scalp dirty, so there is no need to wash with the bs. If your hair feels dry, straw-like, etc. try using some natural oil, like coconut or what have you, rubbed into the ends to keep them moisturized.

Cool thanks!

Dh went to the salon (he's hooked!) and actually said "please don't wash my hair or put styling products in it"

I need a haircut...

we don't swim frequently, but I rinse with vinegar and water. chlorine is alkaline, and baking soda is, too, so it would seem redundant to me. YMMV.

I haven't gone swimming yet, but I had an idea and wanted to put it out there to see what others thought. I am likely going to end up with dry hair (I always do every summer)...I wonder if damping it down and putting a little oil (jojoba, almond, etc.) on the ends would help?

I think the most important step to protecting hair from chlorine is to get it good and wet with either plain water or vinegar water before you get in. Conditioner, oil (we use jojoba), or even suntan lotion applied to the hair will help keep the chlorine out of the hair shaft.

After swimming, I rinse at the pool with plain water if it is available. Then I use bs solution (not paste) at home, rinse well (soak if possible) in plain water, then dilute vinegar solution final rinse and leave it in.

I will be vacationing at a house with a pool, and I just bought a silicone swim cap Looks dorky as can be, but won't snag my hair and will keep it dry and protected from chlorine and sun.

Wow, girlndocs, where does one get a silicone swim cap? I have one from my swimming lessons, but it's like swimsuit material and is just to keep the hair out of the way and not dry.

I Froogled "silicone swim cap" :LOL I think it came from some place like "Swimshop". Cost me about $9.

And it fits *very* snugly. I don't think no water's gettin' in' there

I read this yesterday after trying to brush through my clorinated straw hair. :LOL I put apricot oil on it before I went back in the pool and it WORKS. Works great to. Thanks for the tip!
