:LOL Ok here it goes. I recently decided I want to sew diaper covers FIRST then I'll get into making the diapers themselves. Well for diaper covers I know I need PUL of somesort, correct? Now I was wondering if I can use Flannel fabric for the outside and just use PUL on the inside...reason I ask is because I have some ADORABLE flannel fabric and PUL isn't in that many cute styles that I can find. Also I heard when you are making a diaper cover or diaper itself that it's best to use FOE, is this correct & if so what width is best to purchase? What other kinds of fabric can I use in making diaper covers besides PUL or Flannel? Also what is best for the closure on the cover? Velcro or Snaps or what? :LOL Thanks for the help mamas!!

Well I'm no expert but I can tell you that cute prints should be reserved for diapers - because flannel absorbs it causes the covers to leak onto the clothing. You can get laminated prints but they are much stiffer and still more prone to leaking than solid PUL. I like to buy my PUL from www.janellespuls.com because she puts a waterproofing agent on them to help them stay waterproof longer.

For covers Fold Over Elastic is a good thing to use - it's relatively easy to sew with and does a good job. For diapers I don't suggest it in general.

You could use heavyweight fleece for covers as well. Just cut out and bind with FOE and add aplix.

Yes, the flannel might cause the covers to wick onto the clothing at the legs and waist. I've had that problem before.

Same wicking problems I'm FOE challenged so I make 2 layer T&T covers to avoid FOE. :LOL

I don't like the way FOE looks so I make one layer windpro covers like this: fleece covers .

Basically I cut out a cover with a 1/2 inch seam allowance, sew elastic to the seam allowance at the legs and back, then fold the seam allowance to the inside of the cover and topstitch all around. Snaps and done.

This summer I am making windpro shorts, even easier and a bit more big boy for my baby. I have a New Look pattern to adapt. I love fleece and wool diaper covers that function as clothing. No snaps or velcro, just elastic waist.
