Reheating food without a microwave...

I didn't want to hijack the microwave-pitching thread, but I need to ask how to re-heat food on a stove without overcooking it?

We don't have a microwave but I've never been able to figure out how to re-heat meat, bread...anything that isn't in liquid and I dry it out when I try to warm it up. I waste a lot of leftovers this way.

Any tricks??

One word: oven. One a low temperature - like 200 for even 10-15 minutes should do it just fine. You can cover it if you're afraid it will dry out but this way you can heat things without adding liquid and you don't have to worry about burning them.

Meat, pasta, and vegetables- I reheat in a skillet, usually on high so it can heat very quickly without changing the "doneness" too much. It helps to cut it up, for example if you had chicken breasts, cut them up in bite sized pieces and put them in a skillet with a tiny bit of oil on high just until they're steaming hot.

toaster ovens can be great also, especially for something you want to come out crispy or crunchy.

Keep the size of the cookware close to the amount of food you are reheating. I have small skillets and saucepans for this purpose. And always use a lid. This seems to work for me.

You can sprinkle a little water on day old bread and put it in the oven. Or, cube it and make croutons.

For pasta, I usually pan fry it in a little oil. I really like to add a little spicy oil, garlic and a new fresh vegetable to left over pasta dishes. Yum!

Pizza is really good in a covered frying pan over medium heat.

Adding a little water and covering works best for other dishes if I don’t want to change the style of the dish too much.
