Trampolines

What do you other moms think about trampolines? Are they as dangerous as they seem? I would like to have one for our kids, but a little boy in my ds's preschool class broke his arm just by landing wrong on the tramp.
I'm curious to what other moms think of them.

We've had several trampoline threads over the last few years, so if you don't get as much response on this one as you'd like, try searching for them. From what I remember, the reviews are quite mixed (what a surprise!). Some moms won't let their kids near trampolines and some of us own them and enjoy jumping on them with our kids.

My girls really enjoy ours. We have the giant net around it so that can't get near the springs, which are covered. My kids don't do flips, they just jump or do somersaults from a standing position. Pediatricians hate trampolines almost as much as scooters because of the number of injuries they see.

ugh, I hate them. I am an attorney with a specialty in insurance stuff and I know one of the largest injury claims for kids (after auto accidents) involves backyard trampolines.

I don't let my dd near them. They are very dangerous IMO.

I would not let my child on a trampoline, either. But what about the mini-trampolines (one person at a time, holding onto a bar)? Are they unsafe, too?

I had a wonderful time on trampolines as a kid and teen. My parents still have one and my kids (ages 4 and almost 2) always want to play on it. But I'm leary. Yes, they're fun but not worth the broken bones. My DH is afraid of them and will not let the kids on one at all. We opted to get a small exercise trampoline that's nearly impossible to hurt yourself on. The kids like it for when they have excess energy to burn off and only one child fits on there at a time. Lately, it's being used as a doll bed.


This looks really cool though for big kids and adults.

Trampolines are all the rage in our neighborhood these days. We're one of the few families who don't have one, and we plan never to get one. I think they're too dangerous, and liability issues scare me, too.

TY for the replies. Hubby gave an emphatic NO anyway. I was just thinking about it. Our old neighbors had one and my dd loved it, both my kids are super high energy and thought it would help them release some of it and build their leg muscles too.
They make me nervous too. Esp. since my kids seem so accident prone on their own. DD broke her arm last fall and six months later broke her finger and ds has had stitches twice already!

another vote for no trampolines here! I heard recently there is some new one thats supposed to be safe or endorsed by some pediatric society? I will admit I am HARD pressed to beleive that... anyone know anything about it?

NO to trampolines here too...a friend of mine's 17 year old daughter broke her ankle on one...and I mean ankle bone right out through the skin.

Also, I know alot of homeowner's insurance companies will cancel you automatically if they find out you have one.

i think they are great if it is in a gymnastics type class or something, a very safe place with someone who understands how to use them safely who is in charge and where the kids are learning about having somone spot them and about being safe while having fun on them
