cats & sandbox

We have a sandbox on our apartment balcony. We share this with a neighbor. We have had the sandbox for a year and have never had a problem with it and our cat. He seemed to know that the box was for our DC, and never bothered it. Our neighbor got a cat, and he jumped for the short divider and used the sandbox at least three times. We carefully cleaned it, including using an enzyme cleaner. The neighbor cat problem is now under control.

Now it's our cat!!! We think it has now become a territory issue. He even tries to use it when we are only 3-4 feet away.

We have a lid for the box, but that hasn't been entired effective. We also try to keep our cat locked away from the balcony. This makes me sad though.

Found more poop this morning.

Is there anything natural I can use that will have deter our cat from using the sandbox?

Any magic sprays??

I heard using orange peels might work.

Well, I have no good suggestion other than converting it into a pool. I thnk you have lost the kitty territory battle. It is war now. If it were a platn, I would say put large rocks in it to keep them out but that won't help your dc. Turn it into a pool. That is what we did with our sandbox. We just fill it with water when dd wants to play in it and empty it when she is done. The cats leave it alone now.

Yikes - Kitty wars! I can't think of anything to deter the cats w/out deterring the kids! You might just have to recondition (yucky word, I know) the cat - like a squirt of water when it goes near the sandbox or something.
