Fight backward BF "Views"! - Page 3

MSNBC thing

I have to say that I can't agree more...and I was actually the pro NIP guest on the MSNBC show (unless there was another one I don't know about!!) It was hard for me to believe that the women on the show were so much less evolved about this than Ron Reagan was. He said some great stuff actually, whereas the women seemed to be living on another planet, or certainly had no personal experience with nursing as far as I could tell! I guess we can't assume that women will understand each others' experience...beliefs often seem to matter more than gender. Anyway if you want to get further riled up you can look at some of the idiotic quotes viewers left on my website, http://www.thenewmom.com. It is hard for me to avoid deleting some of them but I believe in free speech!

Can I just say that one of the saddest things for me about all of this is that these things are being said by other women couldn't we all try to support each other?

Great! I think nice BF pics will show NIP is tasteful & normal, not sexualy or dirty. It's only a breast for heaven sakes!

I've got my article on lactophobia done. Does anyone want to edit it? I am working on citing sources on all the facts I included.

I will do some research and see what I can find out...

Great! Even if we could get one celeb to say BF is natural it would help!

I was thinking of someone doing an article like, "Does Breastfeeding in public make you uncomfortable? Why? Is it you were never exposed to it as a child? Is it the sexualization of breasts? Is it the lack of education on breastfeeding?"

I was going to offer my help anyway when I saw your post. I would love to contribute to this project and have some copy editing experience. Send me the text and I will happily run through it.

Also if any of the other content needs to be proof-read/edited I will do that as well if it is needed.

Also I will be glad to get my DH to send you an email with his take. He is more of a lactivist sometimes than I am!

Blessings,
Nichol

Hey,

I am skipping around because I was out-of-town and haven't been able to check-in since Mon. That is A LOT of posts and threads to miss; but...I was thinking the same thing when I caught the link here. If I am being redundant I apologise.

There should be some kind of lactactivist support area/site with the tools you need for grassroots advocacy etc.

A central site that tracks press helps keep a record of supportive reporters that may be interested in follow-up or more in-depth studies. Also helping people write press releases (maybe having some templates) and how to disseminate.

I would think getting all the press for "the view" nurse-in with the press release be a start. Then contacting others with successful nurse ins and the press associated and their press release. For each incidence of harrassment, assault and/or discrimination also have the State laws there or linked.

I know I really need to get caught up but I was gone all night and my family may need a little TLC and I might try to squeeze in some sleep; if I can slow my brain down!

Wonderful! Can someone (Little Bear's Mama, LOL) surf for press links on The View" incident? Get it gathered & email it to me, since MDC truncates links.

Is Promom doing much on this situation? If so that would be a good place to coordinate efforts since that is what that board is all about.

Mamafae - I emailed you my article so hopefully you got it!

Thiers looks like it is geared toward moms & advocacy. The focus of this one will be a Media resource. A place to refer media & those who are "uncomfortable" with BF & NIP.

What about that slide show on that website "When Mothers Nurse?" Have you seen it? It's really beautifully done. Here's the website:

http://www.whenmothersnurse.com/

Fishing around for the slideshow....hmmm. I can't exactly find it. Anyway, it's really really beautifully done and maybe you could borrow theirs (with their permission of course) or create your own?

I was thinking that it would be good to have a "who breastfeeds" section where moms could send in a picture and a brief bit of info about themselves. Show that it is not just weathly SAHM that nurse but poor women, working women, women with one breast, students, women of color, married women, single women, ect. After all WE are the demographic that they want to reach!

Here is an op-ed piece from the LA times this morning - it too got me all riled up (seems to be happening alot lately) and I think this directly pertains to the site you want to start -
http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/...mment-opinions
what it talks about is furthering the belief that only RADICAL women breastfeed, that they will belittle women who choose to bottlefeed and that we as a society shouldn't encourage breastfeeding because we might make women who choose not to breastfeed feel bad. It also discounts the benefits of breastfeeding - IMO this is exactly the perception that needs to change.
If you get a committee together I would love to be on it - I am doing some research today about the benefits of breastfeeding in heathcare dollars, and about the code words (intimate, radical, feminist - which don't bother me personally) but which are used to scare people, so I can share that after I compile it.
