Flouride for babies, why?

Why are flouride drops recomended for babies. My baby went for his 6mo well baby check up (a month ago) and the ped prescribed flouride drops with vitamin D. She said the D was because he'd BF and BM doens't have vit D. The flouride is for his teeth to come. Well, I haven't filled the prescription because I don't really know the need for flouride. Is there one? Why do the prescribe if there isn't a need?

TIA

We decided to just say no to Flouride.

Here is what we read that helped us make that decision:

Dentists Show Fluoridation a Failure

Time for fluoride again!

NEW YORK — While not their intention, studies by dentist/researchers indicate fluoridation fails to reduce tooth decay, especially in the poor. And that, fluoride, above that found in toothpaste, confers no alleged benefit to the majority(14).

Organized dentistry keeps this information from open public debate by adopting the “no comment” approach as outlined in the Spring 2002 "Journal of Public Health Dentistry"(18). “One of the possible modes of action against the increasing antifluoridation wave is restraint and avoidance of any confrontation. This ‘no comment’ approach, (is) often mentioned in the American literature...,” report dentists Vered & Sgan-Cohen. So here is information dentists hope you’ll never see or question:

I agree that fluoride is not the be-all and end-all, but this "report" is a pretty sorry example.

You can do better than that, HM!

From what I read-
and I believe one source was a mothering article, and a earth article, but ive read a lot-
IS it really depends on what type of floridation.

Floride in the water does seem to cause teeth spotting that can casue decay- and is not so effective.
But floride gel is suppose to be very effective in bonding with the tooth that it is directly applied to.

I hate the idea of floride in the water. It may be one of the factors that my daughter has so many cavities. And it in fact is a plan to help a minority of kids while putting the majority at risk. It also has not been proven safe over a lifetime of other methods of getting it in your system-like bathing.
What bothers me about the floride in water debate is that is glosses over the whole problem of treating the poor. It is a quick fix for a city to say- see we did something to help out- but it doesnt really do much of anythign for them. Often doctors charge more to patients in poor areas or without insurance, and often dentist plain just dont reach out to the poor. And it doesnt garentee a protection.

That said, my family being in the poor catagory with cavities after doing everything right, I do use floride gel an occasionally Act mouth wash with floride when we are out- And I do worry about what it means to my 2 year old to have high level of floride in her system.

Did I make sense?

Smilemomma, please read this! - About flouride.

Smilemomma,,

I just went thru a lot of the Dental Archieves related to fluoride and found that you recommend to use it. But I want to know your opinion on the following article, which was actually posted by Elismama as a reply to a thread, "Flouride for babies, why?"

http://www.mothering.com/10-0-0/htm...ouride107.shtml

My ds is 11-mth-old and since he was 6-mth-old I have given him flouride drop, 1ml/day. When ped prescribed it because the water in our area is not flouridated(sp?) and asked to give it to my ds, I did not even question but just followed. While I was surfing around this board I saw the article and threw away the fluoride bottle as soon as I got home and thought, "Oh my god, what have I given to my darling son?". Am I too simple-minded? And then I started to search the arvhieves and found a lot of information but it looks like some people recommend it while some people do not. Have you read the article? What do you think about it? Ds does not allow me to clean his teeth but I am thinking of using Baby Orajel until he is ready to use toothbrush and toothpate.

Thanks,
Timmy's mom.

Thanks!

Thank you, Smilemomma,

yes, that is exactly the answer I was hoping to get. No specific test or analysis was done for neither my son nor water in my area. I try not to give my son any kind of meds unless he really suffers from illness. I am glad that I threw away the flouride supplement for now but I am thinking of using toothpaste w/ flouride when he is ready as you recommended on the other threads.

Thanks, again.

Several months back I did some research on flouride and dental flourosis. I decided sopon after that we are innodated with flouride, which is a poison, and as of now I will just make sure DD-who already has teeth problems, mucho filling by age 3, IMO caused my large doses of iron taken to comabt lead. ANYWAY, to make sure she does not get flouride treatments. My links to info. were saved on my work computer but since I have been laid off I no longer have them

DD dentist appt. was today. She loves it, but the staff is evil. The yhate me b/c I get state insurance for woerking families (not Medicaid) an have told me on more than one occasion that I am commmunity service. They are the only ped. dentist tha ttakes my shitty HMO, so I deal. They were nasty to me for requesting NO flouride treatment, but I stood my ground anyway. Iwill keep doing my homework and they can hate me for it!

bebesho2--I just spotted a brown spot on 17 mo old ds's teeth after we'd been giving him iron supplement drops for a month and a half. I was wondering if there could be a connection too! Do you know any more? I am soo hoping this spot is anything other than decay as I really can't stand the idea of my baby having a filling.
I only have a few minutes to post but:
They say brown spots are only temporary discolorations due to iron supplementation BUT keep an eye on the spot b/c every "brown" spot on DD's teeth tturned to rot spots!

I will check back later with more info!

Oh no! Your poor dd! I will keep an eye out ! As well as look for a good DDS for ds. . .

Alright, so the question, then, is how much fluoride IS in public drinking water? Is that a standard nationwide? I hate this topic. We're on well water and we've chosen to throw away our dr's prescrip. for fluoride supplements. Ds, 15 mos., also uses Weleda toothpaste w/o fluoride. I always wonder if I'm doing him a disservice.

He's in daycare so drinks public water during the day but his sibling to be will never experience the joy of daycare water.

ARGHHHH
Smilemomma, any insights?
Yep, BusyMommy! There's a long thread in the archives dedicated to just the fluoride issues from this board.

It discusses on there how to find out the fluoride content of your particular water, as well as other sources of fluoride.

Happy Hunting!

P. S. I hate this topic too!

natural or by product flouride

I've done a lot of research on the subject. The real issue, as I can understand it, is the source of the flouride. NaFl or sodium flouride is a byproduct of aluminum production and thus comes along with a host of other nasty chemicals. CaFl is naturally occuring and if obtained naturally (Trinity Springs water for instance or Toms of Maine toothpaste) is not such a nasty thing. In trace amounts and delivered with the other minerals that God placed in the earth / water with it, it can be a helpful thing. Whenever it is not specified, it is always NaFl, as far as I know. You can send me an email and I will give you the footnotes to prove this. You also can visit Trinity Spring Water's web site. I think some of this info is there also.
