Kefir - do you get used to the taste?

I just got some kefir for the first time. It is plain. So far I'm not enjoying it at all. FTR, I don't care for plain yogurt either. But I don't mind plain yogurt mixed into smoothies or with food. Did it take you long to adjust? Oh, and the smell is really the hardest part for me. Even a smoothie with kefir, that tastes relatively good, grosses me out if I smell it.

I was wondering the same thing. I bought some kefir that is peach flavoured, I couldn't tell though because I plugged my nose and chugged down 1/2 cup. Are the nasty burps normal after drinking that stuff? I've been reluctant to try it again.

It didn't take me long to learn to like it. Part of the reason it smelled and tasted funny to me initially was that my grains were adjusting to their new environment. After a couple of batches, I found it much more pleasant, but I still didn't care to drink it plain. I like to add a bit of juice to sweeten it, about 2 oz. juice per 8 oz. kefir. My favorite juices to add are coconut, mango, and papaya.
