How do people pay for homebirth? - Page 2

I'm in CA, and I delivered at home four times and paid for it out of pocket four times. Totally worth it.

We're paying out-of-pocket, either a check or cash. We've saved. It's worth the money. We save so much money breastfeeding, cloth diapering and all that other stuff that it's not as big a stretch as you'd think. Our MW is $1800. We had that money saved for other things, but we'll pay the MW, get it over with, then save again for something else (a van). We don't even have insurance as an option, so out-of-pocket was the only way we'd be able to go.

We only have one car (and it's a very nice '97Toyota Camry that my FIL *gave* us.) Dh is a grad student (he rides the bus every day), so we're really poor. We're using our tax refund. But I have to admit that we are extremely fortunate to have my PIL who are pretty well off due to very good planning on my FIL's part before he retired. They give us money pretty often and would gladly pay for our homebirth if we mentioned we were short on cash. My MIL is almost as excited as I am about my having a homebirth. ROFL!

Do you qualify for insurance through the state? My state will cover a homebirth.

My first post on this forum...

While I must say its encouraging to me that BCBSMA PPO will cover a birthcenter birth, one of the things that comes to mind is several clauses of the PPO. The first one being that since its a PPO they let you go "out of network" for medical care-will they/should(n't) they cover *any* part of a homebirth? Second is is that the thing about "if there aren't any providers of that type" in the area then they cover it as in network. I too have BCBSMA PPO, although I'm not yet pg, but really want a HB next time am and researching it now. I am a little over an hour west of you, west of Worcester. There's no birthcenters in our area, although, I really should check the Hartford,CT area. Keep us updated, I am watching this thread closely.
