WHO sees number of vaccines doubling in decade

Last Updated: 2005-06-15 13:17:15 -0400 (Reuters Health)

LONDON (Reuters) - The number of vaccines available to prevent diseases is likely to double from the current 20 in the next decade or so, the World Health Organisation said on Wednesday.

New vaccines are being developed against a range of often deadly infectious diseases - including meningitis, malaria and cervical cancer - following recent scientific breakthroughs.

That has revived interest in the sector, with major vaccine makers like GlaxoSmithKline Plc, Sanofi-Aventis and Merck & Co Inc all highlighting the potential of their new or experimental products.

But Dr Marie-Paule Kieny, head of vaccine research for the global health body, said the world needed to do more to ensure these novel preventative treatments reached people in need in the developing world.

"These are exciting times in vaccine development. Several new products will soon be available that together could protect millions of lives from disease," she told a conference in Brazil.

"However, experience has shown that the uptake of new vaccines is extremely slow. We urgently must find solutions to deliver these powerful and proven health tools to all people at risk."

Obstacles to delivering vaccines to people in need were scientific, financial, technical and regulatory, she said.

Oh yes...quite exciting if you are a shareholder!

solutions like...not testing them for safety or efficacy.

All the more reason to make sure our children understand WHY they are not vaxed and why THEIR children should not be vaxed.

Can I move to a different planet?

We're doomed!

As a human species I mean. There is no way we'll survive and onslaught of that magnitude.

They are strictly out to do us in and make mucho money in the process. PIGS!

And so many people are totally naive.

for cervical cancer ? Are they kidding me ?

Yet the very meds that CAUSE cervical cancer are still on the market ?

A vaccine to prevent what the pill gave you because you had a vaccine ?

"Genital warts" = "cervical cancer" when there's a vax for it.
Marketing...no self respecting person would get a vax for an STD.

That's exactly what Hep B is! And they couldn't get adults and teenagers to do it, so they mandated it for children. At birth.

I can forsee all babies being vaxed against HPV (the virus that often causes cervical cancer), chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphillis, HIV, etc.

Yep, I was just going to say that... Of course, it will have to be done at birth so parents don't have to "inconveniece" their teenagers to take them in and get it...

Ugh. I'm kind of interested in what the other 17 diseases will be. Probably smoking, obesity, and diabetes are among them... I wouldn't be surprised if they attempted to come up with a vax for mental illness and autism as well...

I think the next ones will include SARS and West Nile Virus.

The vax against cervical cancer will have to be given to both female and male to create 'herd immunity'

I did a check on new vaccines today, and found they've got one against scorpion toxin.

And they're tracking into that "technology" vaccines against snakes like the rattle snakes.

anyone for a snake and scorpion vaccine? Must surely be an essential accessory. Particularly for the blind.

why? Dark chocolate especially, is very good for you. And I mean that seriously. People interested in good health should consider 50 grams of it a day...

I am being perfectly serious.....

Who would be the target pop for these vax? The crocodile hunter? Perhaps they should give these at birth. Better to be safe than sorry.

Actually, what we really need a good vaccine for, is to prevent the 100,000 people who die every year in the USA from preventable medical error.

Now, if that worked and had no side-effects, the world would be overpopulated might quick.
