Why didn't you vaccinate?

I am really curious why families have decided not to vaccinate because we just moved to NYC and I had never given our choice not to any unneccessary thought, but people are now trying to use major scare tactice to get us to vaccinate. We can really use resources and reasons just as reassurance.

Thanks

You might want to check out this thread http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=298108 as this question was just recently asked.

I did want to reply, though and say that when DD#1 was born, we did start to get her vaxed because I always said that "living in NYC was like living in a petri dish and she could get all kinds of diseases just riding the subway." Well...that's a bunch of bunk. (unfortunately I waited way too long to actually do the research and realize that) The truth of the matter is that your kids are no more at risk in NY than they are in any other city. Even travel to third world countries (or New Jersey:LOL ) are perfectly safe. It all depends on the constitution of the child...and the less compromised their immune systems are from vaxes, the better.

Welcome to NYC!

I strongly suggest that you read and research here and on other search engines and make up your own mind.

Theatremum,
thanks for that post i will check out the other post. Do you homschool or know anyone who does in NYC by any chance???? That would be great!!!! Thanks again for your reassurance. I have kept pretty current with vax info, but I do NOT keep minute to minute details. My gut tells me that my boys are strong and healthy. My ped Dr. Schiller is awesome too- he didn't vax his kids either....its just family and friends who have different lifestyles that give us trouble....again thanks for both of your posts!

We still aren't sure if we want to home school or not. I kinda want to unschool, but I am also wanting to go back to work. DD#1 is going to go to a public pre-K this fall (providing my exemption gets approved) just because she is such a social kid and I think it would be good for her to get a couple hours away from mom and with other kids. I guess we will see how it goes and also see if we can move to a slightly better neighborhood with better schools in the next couple years.

My oldest is in part time pre k right now.... its private in Brooklyn. I like somethings...other things I do not like food, bad habbits of others, and them not getting out of the building enough. I am a teaching artist so I work a few hours each day in the public school system.

I just read your siggie... youre a hippie mom in NYC. That worked well for me in New Orleans - where I am from, but here people are serious about every momnet of their children's live sbeing scheduled. That scares me. I have been trying to adhere to our own zangy rythym and just chill out and trust them and me YKWIM?

This is the wrong thread for this comment, but homeschooling takes care of these complaints.

I am pretty sure I am opting out of all vaccinations after reading about the reactions they can cause. It seems you are more likely to get sick from being vaccinated then from being unvaccinated!

I found "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Children's Vaccinations" to be a great book to start anyone researching the pros and cons of vaccinations.

You are on the UWS, right? It is like its own little world there. (same with the UES). Don't get me wrong...I love the UWS...beautiful homes, Riverside Park, Fairway Market....but the "stereotypical" family up there is mainstream mamas..both parents working...nanny...gotta-get-the-little-bugger-into-the-right-preschool-so-he/she-can-go-to-the-right-college-and -have-the-right-career mentality. So it might be harder to find some like-minded mamas up there. Come on over to Astoria! LOL!

I haven't gone to any of these meetings yet (hope to in the fall), but you might want to check out: http://www.nyvic.org/nyvic/support/default.htm

Stay strong.

We are in the city a lot and enjoy all the advantages of the city, but like you said I rarely see another mommy like me just hanging out. Its busy busy busy..... thanks for the website I'll be sure to get to one of the meetings after Public schools are closed... I am ateaching artist and we are closing out the school year... needless to say I am exhausted....but I really do thank you... any way that we can connect with likeminded folks we are totally there.... I'm blabbing now

Apple juice, you are so right I will venture over there... my main complaint is that I never intended on sending my son to school in the first place, so now I have another set of issues to deal with.... I think I will mosey (sp) on over there.
