C-section scheduled for Tuesday morning

I'm home from a morning of testing. The most conservative estimate, by u/s, for Liam's weight is 10lb 3oz (the others were 10lb 4.5oz & 5oz) - well over the 9lb 9oz threshold for a vaginal delivery of a baby of a diabetic mama. Even with a 10% error of margin, this would still put him over 9lbs in one direction, or around 11lbs in the other. I am fairly let down that I won't be having the birth that I dreamed of, but then again, I'd be devastated in the event that something happen during delivery. The way I look at it, 5 years from now I won't care HOW he got here, just that he is here and healthy.

So, unless I go into real labor between now and then, we are scheduled for 9:30am CST on Tuesday the 28th

I'm really really glad that I didn't purchase a bunch of NB stuff LOL!!!

Hi Tara,

Is there some sort of complication of GD that you can't vaginally deliver bigger babies? Just wondering because mine measure that large and noone has ever mentioned c-section to me.

I am so sorry - but you are right, it wont matter how he got here just that he is safe and healthy! Still hoping you go into labor before Tues. - that is still 4+ days!

Emily - the reason its more dangerous for GD babies is that they are not always proportional, they often have larger shoulders than a non GD baby so even though the head comes out fine the shoulders get stuck. Where in a 9 or 10 lb baby that the mama didnt have GD the shoulders are usually smaller so if the head makes its way out first the shoulders have no problem.

Ah, that totally makes sense. I was wondering if it was a blood sugar issue or something.

Btw, I am so sorry you aren't getting the vaginal birth that you wanted but a healthy baby (and dare I say, I healthy mom) are what is really important!!!!! I wish you a beautiful cesarean birth, I am really excited for you to meet your baby!!!

Were your others vaginal deliveries? I'm surprised if you already delivered a baby of this size x2 that your OB would recommend a c/sec.

Good luck Tara!!
keep us posted, I'll be thinking of you on Tuesday if
we don't hear something before then.

My others were vaginal deliveries - 7lb 7oz & 8lbs even, but no GD. THis time around I'm on 2 types of insulin, heavily controlled diet & excercise, testing 4-6 times a day...blah blah blah...It's the GD that can cause the disproportionate shoulder size....My OB has a VERY low section rate - so I trust her on this one

On a very very positive note, I've actually lost 4 lbs total for the pregnancy, so a baby that size would be a 14 lb loss, with no fluid loss or anything Here's to me & a healthier future...hopefully diabetes free!

Sorry to hear you may not get the birth you want. But in this case maybe a c-section really is the best option (and I don't say that lightly!)

Good luck!

Tara,
I hope your recovery will be smooth; rest and be gentle with yourself. I'm sorry you are losing your dream birth...I know how it feels. My experience was, even though I believed that the c/s was best for Simon (breech), and of course I was glad to have him safe and healthy, it didn't change the real sadness of not having the gentle birth we had planned for. So don't hesitate to get emotional support if you need it...Hoping the best for you. Do you have your birth plan worked out with the OB, will the baby be able to stay with you always, etc?

Well if you keep your cleaning spree up you might just push yourself into labor

I am curious if they are going to schedule a c-seciton why are they doing it before your due date?

And I can't wait to see pictures. Have I said yet how much I love the name Liam?

Tara, I'm so sorry you can't have the birth you wanted . Healthy mom and babe is what's most important, but it's okay to grieve over losing the birth you wanted. One of my best friends is grappling with this right now -- she also has GD (heavily controlled with insulin, diet, exercise), and her baby is still very large, so it's likely she'll have a c/s on the 9th of July.

You will be in my thoughts and prayers, and I am wishing you a speedy recovery. Can't wait for your babe to arrive, and to hear all about him!

We've never been quite sure, exactly, when I was actually due because I was on the pill when I got pg last year : Though I have an edd of 7/3, there's never been a real confirm on that one

Thanks for the compliment on the name! We have an Irish last name, so going with an Irish first name seemed the logical choice! Both me and DH can actually trace our ancestory backwards to Ireland.

OT sorry. : My grandmother has gotten really into our family geaneology and she traced us back to the 1500s in some parts...crazy! Of course it has taken years and years of work.

also sorry that you don't get to go along with your original plan but these things happen...
and on the upside it is very exciting to know he'll be here soon!!!

MOD, a healthy baby, and a safe delivery for both is all that matters!!!!
However I was GD with preg #2, and had him vaginally he was 10 lbs 14 oz, I was borderline with #3, and he was 10lbs 1 oz. I do know that they definately wanted to deliver Liam (#2) because he had passed his meconium and it was safer to deliver than to do a c-section, so I guess there are many different varriables, but I was pretty much prepped to do a c-section in case I couldn't push him out entirely.

And Liam is a good name, however, Liam gets written down as Leum or Leon. And then I get asked "oh like Liam Nessom" and I say "no like Liam, my two cousins, and a great uncle, it's a family name" But one cousin is Liam, the other is Leigham, pronounced the same. And they are all quite "cheeky" individuals.

Well, MOD, you are getting close. It must be interesting to know your baby will be here by a specific time. Are you rushing doing last minute things, or just enjoying your family's current size for the last days? Very exciting.
