I always found it a little strange!! It was the part about the mom driving over to the grown man's house and climbing in his window after climbing a ladder....a bit strange for me!! :LOL

count me in on the I think it's creepy team. My husband cries when he reads it to our DD, and I hide the book whenever it sneaks back out again. My mom gave it to me too.

We have "I love you as much" and love it

I love it. Yes, the symbolism might be creepy , but I never took it literally.
It make sme cry. In fact, just thinking about it and loooking at my son sleeping under my desk hugging my feet, I want to cry!

have the book. got it because saw how much dd enjoyed it at dc. creepy though. doesnt reduce me to tears though. feels like too much sap. u know purposely creating the teary effect. interesting that a man wrote it and not a woman. or am i being too sexist.

That book creeps me out. The sentiment is a good one, but jeeze. I always envision my mother sneaking over to my older brother's house. He is a third-degree black belt and lets say a little jumpy in his sleep...

I think it's creepy.

It's even worse at the end when he's singing to his baby daughter. I can't help getting an image out of my head of the mother climbing up the ladder and waiting patiently while the son and his wife finish up and he falls asleep so she can go snuggle him and sing the creepy song to him. Then, this guy is going to go do the same thing to his daughter. It's a sick, sick cycle that one. :LOL

I think people take this book waaaaaaaaaay to literally. It's symbolic. Remember literary symbolism ,anyone? 9th grade English?

I think if the art were nicer, people wouldn't freak over this book so much. Maybe they will re-release it someday with pastel illustrations of bunnies.
Wait a second, did I post this under someone else's name? No, if it had been me, I would have used the phrase, "Black Jelly Bean Book", which is my version of Love it or Hate it book. And instead of symbolic, I've always defended it by saying, "It's a metaphor people! She didn't REALLY climb the ladder." And I wouldn't want to see pastel bunnies, just better wallpaper.

:LOL

Perhaps if i hadn't been draining the second glass of wine, I would have typed 'metaphor'. Because truly, metaphor is correct and 'symbolic' isn't quite.

If I'd been draining the third glass, I might have added, 'Get a library card, already'.

I try to reseve that third drink for very special occasions ...

I kinda creeped me the first time I read it but dd loves it. We sing the song together. I just focus on the idea it is trying to convey, that a mother could love her child so much as to want to hug and hold him like a baby forever.
