I feel like i have seen them all that are good , i have a membership at Blockbuster and they don't have some of the more obscure movies ...any older ones that i might have missed, like an epic??

I love foreign films esp french ones but have seen most of them at my dvd store.

any suggestions??

Did you see "The Triplets of Belleville"? French-Canadian animated flick. Great music.
Yeah, Triplets of Belleville is awesome.

I just watched The Motorcycle Diaries for the second time, just tonight.

Have you seen The Son's Room? It's a French film and wonderful.

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring is a Korean film based on a Buddhist story and is beautiful.

And for a documentary I reccommend Shake Hands with the Devil.

Hmmm...let me think what else I've seen recently. All four I rented at Blockbuster, but I do find where I live now there are way more documentaries and foreign films at the Blockbuster than where I used to live.

Thank you guys, I haven't seen any of them except "Spring, summer, fall, winter and spring" (great film) That gives me a place to start...keep em coming ladies (and men?)
I want to compile a master list so i don't have to spend so much time in the store with kids in tow.

I also like Japanese scary films ...creepy. I just saw a creepy korean film called "a Tale of Two Sisters" and it was good, definately twisty, i liked it.

I haven't seen it yet, but my brother and his GF keep mentioning "OldBoy", a Korena revenge flick.

My Cuban neighbour lent me his copy of "Fresa y chocolate" (Stawberry and Chocolate). It's about a friendship between a young and naive man who doesn't question the revolution and an older gay man who questions a lot about it. My neighbour wanted me to see it because he was a young revolutionary and believed in it with everthing he is and then was very hurt when a lot of those ideals weren't actualized, particularly the ending of racism as he's very dark and not of Spanish heritage so his life in Cuba was very different than that of many of his light skinned and Spanish descended neighbours. He defected about 17-20 years ago and misses it terribly and his family. He thought the film could give me more insight into a non-tourist Cuba. The film's heavy in ideas, if nothing else.

And I really recommend anything by Yimou Zhang. My favorites are "To Live" and "Ju Dou" and "Qui Ju da guan si." He most recently did "Hero" and "House of the Flying Daggers" which are amazing too, but I like his smaller and non-action films best.

I would also recommend "The Triplets of Belleville". That's the only french film that pops into my head right now. Not foreign, but one I've seen more than once and enjoyed is "The Dead Man". I think I found in the Sundance Channel section or something of the sorts at my blockbuster. Also, I'm not even a fan of horror movies, but Dario Argento makes some great ones. "Suspiria" and "Inferno" come to mind.

It seems like everyone's seen Amelie, but just in case... I loved it.

Some of the same people worked on City of Lost Children, which was strange and cool.

And I'm somehow reminded of an Italian (I think) film called Drowning By Numbers. It's a little dark, but I have fond memories of it.

Have you seen the A & E version of Pride and Prejudice?

Donnie Darco and Dirty Pretty Things are really good. If you haven't seen The Butterfly Effect, it's really good...despite the fact that Ashton Kutcher is the lead.

I liked "Saved" a lot...

I liked _Saved_ a lot too, and I just got _Children of Heaven_ through Netflix and loved it. Also, Chasing Amy and Shirley Valentine (only available on VHS in the US) are two of my favorite "chick flicks"

Maybe these are not exactly foreign films, but "international" films?

Maria Full of Grace

City of God

Y Tu Mama Tambien

The Wooden Camera

Hotel Rwanda

I loved Big Fish.

Also, you really can't go wrong with Chocolat! Great overall movie - plus you get the added benefit of a very, very hot Johnny Depp.....

I assume everyone has already seen Pay It Forward - only non-kid dvd I've ever bought.

You've most likely seen these but just in case:

Ma vie en rose

the princess and the warrior

run, lola run

Spirited Away---really really enjoyed this one. Funny, animated and kinda epic like.

My favorite foreign movies.

To Be and To Have is a lovely French film about a man who is a school teacher in a one-room schoolhouse in the country. It's really wonderful.

We also liked Village of Dreams

Bend it Like Beckam: funny family scenes, love its mostly female characters
The station agent:
Strictly Ballroom: light movie, australian, quirky
What's eatiang gilbert grape
RAY: awesome movie, equally brillia& performance by jamie lee fox
Dancer in the DArk: musical, very dark, a bit depressing, unusual, but I loved it

Oooooo, Strictly Ballroom! That's one of my favorites! Time to watch it again, I think!

I just saw The Barbarian Invasions the other night - It's a Quebecois film, I think? In Canadian French with subtitles and a little in English. It was great!

Also saw A Home At the End of the World, which was very different and very good.

But, the most excellent movie I've seen all year? A Love Song For Bobby Long. Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.

The Wedding Banquet
Wings of Desire
Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down
Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (these last two are my faves, but anything by Almodovar)
Finding Forrester
Someone to Watch Over Me
Twelve Monkeys
The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover
Scotland, PA (nifty new version of MacBeth w/Maura Tierney)

I am seconding A Home At the End of the World. Just rented it over the weekend and loved it, and that's saying a lot cause I usually avoid anything with Colin Farrell.

Bad Education. Just watched this tonight and it deepend my awe of Gael Garcia Bernal.

I have a sub to Blockbuster.com and I know they and netflix both have LOADS AND LOADS of the more obscure films. As a matter of fact, I just put Amelie and Shall We Dance (the real one) on my list along with a few others that I've never seen on the shelves at BB.

Some films I've loved recently (or not so recently)...

Chocolat
Shall We Dance (subtitled/foreign film)
Finding Neverland
Quills
Life as a House

On my list is

Wicker Park
Pollack
Frieda
House of Sand and Fog
Maria Full of Grace
