A friend of mine loaned me the Nanny Diaries and I read it all this weekend! I just finished it and am feeling so sad for poor little Grayer and Nanny
hmmph.
Just wanted to post about it.

What is the premise??

Beloved, Nanny Diaries was written by a couple of Nanny's who worked in NYC. It's a fictitious story based on compiled real-life families. I have to say that I loved this book. I live in the NYC area, and know many families who are REALLY like this, so reading the book was somewhat catharctic and gossipy.

You know the types (or have heard of them): Dad has a highpaying city job, and the stay-at-home mother (former high-powered career executive) hires a nanny to raise her kids, and a full-time house keeper, and one is left to wonder just what it is that she does all day.

Warning: SPOILER ahead!!!

Emilie - I agree that the end was difficult, and you can't help but feel awful for little Grayer. He's almost destined to grow into the same sort of person that his parents are. I did see that ending coming from a mile away though. How else could it end? In reality, these nanny's ALL grow close to their charges, and ALL have to say goodbye at some time.

I read that one. It of course, made me sad at the end too. For a similar but not quite so heart tugging read, try The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger. It's the same concept - true story type deal. But it's abt an intern in the fashion mag industry. Great read!!

Don't forget the driver, too. Yup, 24/7 "me time". I liked the book well enough but could've smacked Nan (nevermind the mother and father) upside the head for letting herself be walked on like a threadbare mat. Sad to think that there really are parents who want nothing to do with their kids. Wealthy or otherwise.

OH- but she really did not get to say goodbye to him.
I just keep picturing him waking up and she is not there! How terriifying.
Sad story- but all to true right.

I liked this book and read it through Bookcrossing, a book-sharing place.

The whole thing rang true for me. I did bump into folks like that when I "nannied" way back when.

I guess I ran in different NYC circles. I thought it was too much of a caricature, over the top but not funny. Oddly enough, I enjoyed Sex & the City, even though it played off some of the same stereotypes. Maybe it just seemed more clever than the ND did to me.
