Can you throw your own shower?

Can you throw your own baby shower? My close friends are having a Blessing Way for me and I am inviting 8 people. I am so excited however I think some people might feel shafted that they are not invited to anything. So I am wondering if I should just have a shower and invite everyone. What you doing Shower, Blessing Way, Both?

Traditionally, no you cannot throw your own (or at least shouldn't) because it would appear that you are looking for people to buy you stuff. In this day and age, though, I think you can get away with a lot more because things are so different now with people living far away from families, etc. It seems like anything goes if you do it "right".

Although you didn't say explicitly what you hope to accomplish by having the shower it appears from your post that it's more to celebrate with all your friends/family rather than the few at the Blessingway, and you aren't just looking to clean up on gifts . . . so maybe you could have some kind of party and send out invites that said "no gifts" and maybe not even call it a shower.

All in all, I think now-a-days you can pretty much do what you want so long as you think through what the right way to do it is. The Blessingway is great, I would be thrilled if someone did that for me, but DH's family is throwing us a shower, which I requested be co-ed and I'm looking forward to that in August. I do hope to clean up on diapers there.
